Lexan Rear Window

Post by Phil Dally »

OK, so today Vairismo and I are replacing the racecar rear glass with Lexan.

At least we're going to pull the glass and prep for lexan.

Have not been able to pick up the right body primer for the channel yet.

My windshield guy in Saugus has it...just haven't gotten by there on a weekday yet.

Thanks to Michael LeVeque for the good guy price on the lexan piece and his advice.

I'm hoping this turns out as nice as the job UNSAFE did on his.

Glass is ready to cut the cord and pull.

Vairismo had to go...not trying this by myself.

Just in case you all forgot...SS trim still a PITA to remove.

To be continued manana!!

Glass is out...Vairismo exposed.

Went easy...sawed with wire.

Test lexan fit.

No problem getting backseat now.

it will be interesting to see if that window flexes at 150 MPH.

At the drag races I noticed mine doing some flexing and I was only going about 90.

I'm sure you have yours bolted down well. In 2008 when I trailered my car to Indy the dang window blew out. I only had the sticky rubber and no trim on yet. It was VERY windy and in the mirror I saw the window starting to lift on one side. I hit the brakes and pulled over right as a big gust blew it the rest of the way out. It was only a few feet behind the trailer but pretty scratched up. I bought a new one while in Indy.

They do save a bunch of weight !
If you buy a replacement windshield for a Vair you may find that it is 5 or more pounds lighter than the OEM windshield.

Ouch ! :rolling:

I figured you'd have the straps . When I noticed my window flexing is was getting pushed inward. I don't know if it will be a problem for you but a thought would be similar straps on the inside.

Made an inner window strap...I love my brake!!!

Read the SCTA-BNI rules and inner is required with lexan.

I think one 3" inner with a matching outer is enough inner.

Plus the the body channel and four regular outer tabs...ain't going anywhere.

It's only mocked in with metal duct tape for pictures.

Final will have a little outward bowing to match the window.

It isn't quite going to touch the lexan because it will scratch it.

The supplies to install are here so I'll be fitting the window next.

Phil - it looks good .

My thought when I wrote the post above was to have two outer straps and two matching inner straps that lined up with each other and create a sandwich. They could even all be fastened together then .

As far as leaving a gap to prevent scratching you might consider some bump pads or a foam strip to protect it if it flexes that much. Mine is pretty thin and I can deform it with light finger pressure.

Rule book ? -- I threw that out years ago
