Crossdrilled Crankshaft

Post by Phil Dally »

Who has an opinion on a second oil hole in crankshaft journals?

Twice as much oil is a good thing...right?

Any strength issues...planning to run at 8K+ RPM WOT only.

I'm no expert and I have my cranks ground by someone else.

I do have a spare crank so I got it out to look at. In tha back of my mind I thought mine were cross-drilled. After checking it out only the center two mains have two hole holes. I really don't know if that was stock or added. I don't have a stock crank to look at.

All of the oil holes are opened up and have chamfered edges. It was was shot peened and heat treated and has the extra dowels in the crank gear and also thru the retainer ring and flywheel.

I've never even got close to 8000 rpm but even at 7000 I visualize things flying apart.

I'd ask Michael Leveque or one of the other experts if I was considering cross drilling. I don't know about weakening the crank - it seems like removing material would weaken it but I don't know.
