tires for 13 inch stock wheels ('64 Monza)
Re: tires for 13 inch stock wheels ('64 Monza)
I've heard that 185 / 80/13 are only to be used on trailers and car dollies. I went to buy him the other day and when I told him I wanted to put them on my Corvair he closed the book and said I won't sell them to you they're not made for a car
Re: tires for 13 inch stock wheels ('64 Monza)
NOT TRUE - Trailer tires (IN ANY SIZE) cannot be used on cars. It just that 185/80x13 is a common trailer tire.russritt wrote:I've heard that 185 / 80/13 are only to be used on trailers and car dollies. This is an old thread, but in the last year MAXXIS brought back the AUTOMOBILE 185/80X13 tire to the U.S.A. A number of companies had sold DOT certified in this size years ago and ALL seemed to decide at once the demand in the U.S.A was not enough to sell them here. MAXXIS got back in the game first with a DOT tire and seems to be doing a good business in this size. BTW - this tire is also used on some of the old late 1950's Mercedes cars. So their is enough demand for ONE supplier. Just make sure you get a MAXXIS automobile tire, NOT the MAXXIS trailer tire.
Just call a dealer, but don't be surprised if you have to wait a few weeks. Every load of MAXXIS tires that comes in sells FAST. But any good tire shop can order them.
BTW - Tires are now dated and tire companies resist running off large batches of tires at one time. In Europe (and maybe Canada now) it's illegal to sell a tire over six years after it was made.

I purchased 5 of these Maxxis P185/80R13 tires for '62 about a year ago. About 100 dollars each and they ship for FREE when you purchase directly from Maxxis. You cant beat the price considering 13 in tires are getting scarcer to find. Has a nice 1 in whitewall as well. Dont know if you're looking for a blackwall/whitewall , but im sure they have solid blackwall if thats what you prefer.
Heres the link : http://shop.maxxis.com/c/ma-1-grand-touring-tire" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
And in regards to the person that said that 13 in tires are considered "trailer" tires is incorrect. Look for a "P" before the numeration of the tire and it will signify they are for passenger automobile use. Ex. P185/80R13

Another shipping option out there that a lot of people don't know about is Fastenal. They do LTL shipping out of their stores, using their own trucks. You need to pack your stuff, and bring it to the store, and it would be shipped to another one of their stores close to where your shipping it to for the person to pick up. And they are very reasonable in their prices too.

There are a number of options for fitting larger wheels and tires to your Early Model Corvair. Most of your questions will likely be answered in the following article. Please read it and then let us know if you have any more questions...
Sizing Corvair Wheels and Tires
http://autoxer.skiblack.com/tires.html
The original 13" diameter wheel and tire size is obsolete, and as the years pass demand for this size continues to decline. As a result fewer tire manufacturers offer much in this size, and modern radial tire technological improvements often do not make their way into the obsolete 13" tire size.
Increasing the wheel diameter on any Early Model or Late Model 1960-69 Corvair to 14" or greater will permit a much-broader tire choice selection. The application of modern technological performance improvements will enhance handling, braking, wet weather performance, and will provide for safer operation of your Corvair. This can be accomplished with no body or chassis modifications, so such changes would not really have any negative impact on the historical aspects of your rare and unique Corvair.
Once you select a wheel size, you can explore tire options easily by browsing http://www.tirerack.com. A great deal of technical information, tire specifications and consumer reviews and feedback information can be found on tires that you might consider for your Corvair in the larger diameter.

Brad - A good article. The author said "Revolutions per mile. Stock is 853 (to 65) and 833 (66-69 and wagons) revs/mile, according to Chevy specs. Oddly enough, the calibration for the speedometer doesn't quite match - the '66 up speedos are set for 825 revs/mile. "
Not odd - it was common practice to have a speedometers read 1- 5MPH fast at 60MPH back then. This was to allow for variations in tire construction and speedometer calibration. If a speedometer reads slow then GM (in theory) could be held liable for someone getting a speeding ticket or going too fast and having an accident. So it was a common practice to have speedometers read a little FAST with a nominal tire. If you look at the old road tests they almost always indicate the speedometer is reading a little fast at 60MPH.

Re: tires for 13 inch stock wheels ('64 Monza)
Yokohama announced they are bringing back 13" Tires for the US market. The 185/70R13 may not be an exact match to the original 1960's tires but it could be a modern tire that is "close enough" for many people. If the price is right...

Keep watching this site, their price is up & down on Maxxis P 185x80x13. Right now they are high but 2 months ago they were $87.00. 2 weeks ago they were $92.00 but if you keep watching you will see them go back down. They have been up & down all year.

Re: tires for 13 inch stock wheels ('64 Monza)
A lot of discussions over the last couple of years and some panic.
The 185/80X13 is still sold for numerous cars around the world, but in the U.S.A. you have to have D.O.T. rating to sell. Importers make the 185/80X13 (most tires here are imported, only about 25% of tires sold here are made in the U.S.A. now). All the "car" tire companies making the 185/80X13 dropped out of the D.O.T. rating program due to low demand here (still make tires sold outside the U.S.A.). Maxxis jumped back in first with a D.O.T. "AUTOMOBILE" tire so they have the 185.80x13 market here cornered. They ship by the container and often supply dwindles until the next batch arrives. Due to tires "aging out" no manufacturer wants tires sitting around for too long.
All those I've talked with that had to "wait" for tires did get the Maxxis tires within a month. Call around to local tire dealers, some will be out, some will have them, some can order them in a few days.
The 185/80X13 gives a better ride vs. a smaller diameter 70 series and the engine isn't over revving on the highway. A fellow in our club had some low profile tires on his Corvair and the engine was turning at 4,000RPM at 62MPH and the speedometer read fast - annoying and wastes gasoline.
BTW - Clark's sells them --- see http://www.corvair.com/user-cgi/search.cgi?part=C12601
You can get the "classic" style Corvair tire at specialty tire sites - but the cost is not for the faint of heart.
