Sport Mirrors

Post by jimbrandberg »

A buddy gave me a box with some mirrors but parts are missing. He thought they are maybe 67 Chevrolet and he has a pair on his car. Ebay calls them Sport Mirrors.
They are the oval mirror sort of bullet shaped. They're made out of pot metal rather than plastic. The pedestal mounts solid to the body and then the mirror adjusts inside the body. They're nice and robust compared to the new plastic ones on Ebay where the whole body rotates on a ball and socket.
All I have is the body and pedestal. I'm missing the mirror and the gasket and the bracket that screws through the gasket and then the pedestal mounts to that by the hook shape on one end and a single screw on the other end.
It seems like someone took them apart to paint body color yellow and the parts are lost somewhere.
I'm having a 66 painted and I like this style of mirror but I suppose my chances of finding parts is nil.

It's possible Jim, but it's a PITA. I have some junkyard sport mirrors on my '66, and I'm working through some of the same stuff you are.

Replacement glass, gaskets, etc you can find on Amazon, BUT...there seems to be 100 variations that are "close", but not the same. You have to do some careful measuring to see what glass you need, and I've returned 3 sets of gaskets already that were "close".

It helps if you know for sure what they came off of. Mine were supposed to be off an '81 Buick Regal, but I'm still searching. A lot of the stuff lists as fits, like they're all universal, but they're not.

Nomenclature changes also. Some called GM sport mirrors, some called Chevy Bullet mirrors, etc.
Happy hunting bud.
Cheers!

Those were used on alot of GM cars for alot of years. It might be easier just to find a new set. They show up at swap meets quite often. Some cars only had a driver's mirror. There were remote ones also but they used cables so the pass side control was in the middle of the dash. The pass remote is somewhat rare.

Yes those are the shape that I'm talking about.
I'm going to two Swap Meets in June so it gives me something to have in mind as I wander through.

I like the idea that yours are metal versus my plastic ones. I hope you find the missing parts.

I'm going to 2 swap meets in June so it gives me something to look for.
In these days of new parts that almost fit I'd be scared to buy new stuff, especially since I don't know exactly what they're from.
The guy must have really liked them to put a pair on his car and have two more pairs painted. Unfortunately he sold the car to my buddy a few years ago due to a rare brain malady.

I put a set of mid 1970's Camaro / Firebird mirrors on my Kelmark car when I had it painted back in 1983 and they met my needs back then and seemed to fit relatively well.
The biggest issue was locating them in such a position that the vent windows would still work and still be able to see out of them. In the end, the factory holes for the stock mirror needed to be welded up.
I liked them well enough that when I saw another pair at a Corvair swap meet for a very reasonable price, I bought them with the intention of using them on my '65 Monza coupe.....that is still the plan.

The Driver Side is a Remote Mirror. I elected to mount the remote on the door panel rather than the metal part of the door. It worked well for me. The remote can be seen in the second photo, forward of the inside door handle and just above where a map pocket might go.

I have seen passenger side remote versions but have not wanted to go to that much effort to install one on that side since they don't get readjusted very often.
I had installed these mirrors mostly so I would not need to readjust mirrors every time the car cover was used.

Thank you for bringing up the positioning. My car is at the paint shop so it's a little late for me to be welding up holes. I'm raising a big stink with a so called friend who stole my spot at the body shop so I'm hesitant to do a further self inflicted delay.
