First day out of storage

Post by Jake »

Incredibly its 80 in Boston today and I got my 65 Corsa convertible out of the garage and out for a nice long run.

Over the winter I replaced the tack and speedo with the VairTrix units, painted the dash fascia and replaced the bulbs with LEDs
All new gauges are working beautifully, lights look great and its running like a top.

Great car day.

I have to guess more of us are getting our cars out for the season this weekend.

Good to hear. Always nice when things come together and the car works well on a nice drive.

I also have to mention before I put the car away I was starting to get concerned about the rear end making noise going around corners.
While it was up on stands in the garage I put in the posi-additive I was advised about by several people here, spun the rear end by hand a bunch and drove it for 50 miles the other day

No whine around corners.
Very happy about that.

Unless the transaxle lube is relatively new (clean) I'd change it and add new posi-additive. Not just Corvair - posi units don't tolerate old dirty lube. Considering how little we drive our hobby cars, it is not a big deal to change lube more often. BTW - too much posi-additive and the transmission synchros won't work well --- this is why the Corvair shop manuals flip - flopped on recommending additive, then saying DON'T use additive. The solution is to change the transaxle lube when it gets old and dirty and add JUST the right amount of posi-additive. No drain plug -- easy to hook up cheap electric drill waste water pump and some hoses and in a few minutes the old lube is out.

In fact, I didn’t really notice the rear end wining around corners till after I changed the fluid.
Well, I heard it before, very faintly but seemed to get much worse within a few hundred miles after changing it.

I added a 4 oz bottle of the posi fluid, per instructions and it def seems to have made the difference
Any of you guys know how much Is too much?

I’ve probably driven it 60 miles since taking it out this weekend. Everything’s working great

It took three bottles of posi fluid to get Zonkers differential to quiet down!!

Ray Sedman (GURU) told me to keep adding posi fluid until it quieted down.

Find someplace to do donuts and do circles in both directions for break in.

I added mine by removing the differential cover and it ended up too full.

You may have to drain off some gear oil...just pull the level check plug.

I added the one small bottle and there’s been a big difference.
I heard one minor little squeal doing some hard cornering but that’s been it.

I’m going to have it up on a lift this weekend doing the rear springs and shocks all around. I’ll see if the diff is overfilled then.

It takes a while for the additive to work into the plates. If you try to "speed this up" with aggressive maneuvers you could overheat the posi plates and cause permanent damage. I would just drive normal with lots of city turns. As for "how much additive" -- enough to get rid of the squeal/chatter, but no so much the transmission synchros are affected. This is the dilemma Chevy discovered since the Corvair manual gear box and differential SHARE lubricant, hence the flip flop over the years of production about using posi additive. Just me.

Good luck and keep us posted.

It really looks like someone hacked my account because my post above has been edited.

The entire last paragraph was written by someone else.

I just changed my password.
