Rear Housing question

Post by Alexh_2023 »

With Rear Housings what is the major Difference between 140hp Rear Housings and Standard housings, I was told by the previous owner who did the motor work on my 64, it had a 140 Rear Housing, but upon ordering a Used 140hp Housing one they look nothing alike, Wondering if I need to just accept the mistake or if i can just bolt it on?

They are all the same except for the turbo, which has the extended timing marks an a riveted on plate. There are some casting differences I have seen with the early EM housings versus later housings. Someone did not know what they were talking about, in your situation.

Use your manuals whenever you have a part question. It won't lead astray very often.

Item #47.
Looks like 60's by themselves.
61-69 Same.
62-66 Turbo.
Yeah. There are some casting and cosmetic differances but other than the timing tab, 61-69 will bolt up and function.

a lot of the very early 1965 140's had the timing tag like a turbo on the rear housing. I have found several untouched ealy 65's like this. maybe the first month of production.

I VAGUELY remember a discussion that some were sand cast and other were die cast and they do look different on the exterior, but AFAIK they all function the same. As others said, except for 1960 they are interchangeable, except turbo and some emissions control engines got the riveted on timing tag. If incorrect, feel free to comment.

The early ones in '60 and I think into '61 were sand cast. They have a different look and are alot heavier. The generator adapter is the same way, sand cast for the first year or 2. They then went to the die cast which used a lot less aluminum and saved weight. They will interchange. I think that is what they are talking about when they say the '60 was different. It does seem like some very early '60's also had some oil squirters that pointed towards the fuel pump and or dist gears. I believe that the very early '60 timing tab was shorter also?

60 engines were 140 cubic inches. I'ts possible someone would interpret a "140 rear housing" to be for a 60.

The 60 housings are quite robust in appearance compared to later designs. They shaved a lot of aluminum off. I've got some top gaskets for the generator mount that are wider in all the surfaces and I save those gaskets for 60s.
I remember Bob Coffin saying the Dune Buggy guys liked those robust rear housings for their rough and tumble lifestyle since it's right there with the motor mount bracket..

Sand cast engine components (rear cover, generator/oil filter adapter) were used until the 1964 model year when Chevrolet began to upgrade to 164ci engines. From 1964 'til 1969, everything was die cast.
