Hole in Bell-housing?

Post by Storm »

Well i noticed a small circular hole near the area where the shift linkage goes.

It is on my 61 Lakewood 3 Spd

After doing some quick digging around I found out it requires a plug that Clark's sells (C503)

I forgot to take a picture but here is a sketch below to see the hole I speak of.

My question about this "hole" is I did heavy cleaning with engine degreasers, scrapers for the dirt & the garden hose. Getting all the above in that hole or maybe none at all, is there anyway to clean that out with a small vacuum cleaner attachment or can I take the shield off the clutch fork area to see more in there to clean or inspect? Just curious as I noticed this hole while cleaning the drums up.

Thanks for the help!

You can take a peak under the dust cover for debris but I doubt you have anything to worry about.

I will have to try!

Here is an attached picture of the area. I think I have removed about 50lbs of stuck on dirt from this wagon so far. Clearly have more to go!

Thanks again!

That plug is missing on most Corvairs in my experience. It is good to have have the plug.
