Post by Mcwho »

How does it work, pressure or temp. How do i test it?

I recently cleaned the oil cooler w carb cleaner, the black sludge eventually dried to these black flakes.

There are spring-loaded pressure disc valves that allow oil to bypass the filter and cooler when the filter is blocked or oil is too thick and won't flow. You can't really test them easily except to make sure they are not stuck open or closed. There is no temperature control system used to bypass the oil cooler if the oil is too cold. Engine temps and oil temps are all regulated as one by the air exit doors and their thermostats for 61-69 models. 60's only used a blocking ring at the blower fan to control engine temps.

Yup. You will get a ton of junk out of the oil cooler when you flush it. I soak them for days with Oil Eater or Simple Green and then give them a shake in an ultrasonic cleaner.

I filled them with carb cleaner and after hours of soaking poured out a black greasy liwuid. Did that at least a dozen times. There was nothing that came out of the oil cooler that looked like oil.

So the only thing the valve does is tKe the cooler out of the circuit and the filter and the rest of the oil system works as normal? Just hotter oil.

(Some of my earlier post may have been written less clearly than I intended so I edited the wording slightly.)

Yes. In effect, the bypass valves (discs) in the oil filter/alternator adapter and the top of the rear housing serve to let oil bypass the filter or the cooler so that you will always get some oil to the engine even when the filter or cooler is not passing enough oil. It is a failsafe to keep oil flowing. Unfiltered or hot oil delivered to the bearings is better than none at all.
