Rebuilding motor
Rebuilding motor
I have a 65 Monza conv with the 140 motor and i have some dropped valve seats, the heads are at a machine shop right now but the valves damaged two pistons, I need to replace those pistons so when I am doing this i want to put new rings in and rod bearings, my question is, how do I replace the bearings without splitting the case, there isn't any room to get to the lower rod nuts, do i need a special tool, or is there a special way to do this

Re: Rebuilding motor
You can position the crankshaft journal to allow access with a 3/8" drive swivel head wrench to both connecting rod nuts. A 3/8-inch Drive Beam Torque wrench (no ratchet head) can also fit to properly torque the 5/16-24 connecting rod nuts to 20-26 ft, lbs.
See the attached 1965 Corvair Chassis Shop Manual - SECTION 6 - ENGINE, page 6-31 for connecting rod cap removal procedure. Page 6-34 describes the connecting rod cap installation procedure.
