You can see a small amount of gear lube around the switch in the picture below, due to a small amount of seepage past the plastic ring seal. ou canot completely drain the transmission through this hole, but some fluid would come out if the switch were not present. Some past owner may have substituted a bolt for a missing or broken switch. The switch is somewhat exposed to possible damage if you drive over an object that strikes the bottom of the transmission.

If you remove the bolt to install the new switch, make sure that any old plastic washers or seals are removed before you install the new switch and gasket (comes with switch) that seals switch to transmission.
