Are the original exhaust manifold gaskets made of asbestos?

Unread post by 68ragtop » Sun Oct 22, 2017 4:36 pm

I've dropped one of the exhaust manifolds and the old gaskets are white. I'm assuming they're made of asbestos. Is this correct?

I just removed mine a few days ago and my first thought was asbestos. I wasn't sure so I treated it as such. I soaked it with water to keep from making dust. Be safe.

I'm pretty sure they are, but I can't say 100%

Thanks!! I used your idea and wet them down. Two gaskets came off intact. Two came off almost intact. And, two broke into pieces. Keeping them wet helped.

If you really want to know, there are laboratory asbestos test kits where you can mail in your sample for analysis...

The simple answer is that if you live in California it has a substance that is known to cause cancer. Everywhere else it is perfectly fine. Lol

Best guess is the originals were. I was just putting some parts away. Fel-Pro Exhaust manifold and pipe gaskets said they were an asbestos replacement material. I can't tell you when these were made. From the looks of some of the other items with them I would say mid 80's or later.
