Some engine interchange questions

Post by naderwaswrong »

In my 63 I have a 65-67 engine #T0228RD. With the car came engine block #T0212YC and heads 3813513 I read are 62-64. The block halves are mint clean, and the heads and crank are straight from the machine shop, crank turned and valves and new seats, etc on the heads. Also came with lifters, complete gasket set, bearings, most everything but jugs and pistons. Rocker arms, pushrods were there but rusted junk.
My question is this: Do any of these parts interchange with the RD engine? Such as the nicely redone heads? Thanks.

Below is your engine serial number…-

T0228RD
Image
T = Tonawanda, New York (GM Tonawanda Engine Plant)
http://media.gm.com/media/us/en/gm/comp ... wanda.html
0228 = Engine manufacturing date (month and date). February 28th.
RD = 1965-1967 110 hp 164 CID Manual Transmission (Corvair 500 and Monza)

T0212YC
Production Date: February 12
YC = 1961-1963 80 hp 145 CID Manual Transmission or 1964 95 hp 164 CID Manual Transmission

Cylinder Heads: 3813513 = 1962-1963 145 CID, 80 hp, 8:1 Compression Ratio, Single Valve Spring Type, Cylinder Bore (Into Head): 3-3/4"

If the number on your crankshaft is "5607" it would appear to match the cases and cylinder heads for a 1962-1963 145 CID engine.

5607 signifies it from an early 145 CI engine.
7293 signifies it from an early 145 CI turbo engine.
8409 signifies it's from the late 164 CI engines, regardless of HP.

If the parts you listed are all related to each other they are not a match for the "RD" 164 CID engine. 1965 and later cylinder heads have a different head gasket mating surface diameter of 3-13/16". 1961-1964 cylinder heads are machined to accept cylinder barrels that have an outside cylinder bore diameter of 3-3/4". If the engine cases are a match for the crankshaft, and the crankshaft ID number is 5607 than the cases would not have adequate clearance for a long stroke 164 CID crankshaft.

No camshaft or timing gear? Are the hydraulic lifters new or used? With flat tappet hydraulic cams, don’t mix old and new parts. New cams need new lifters and vice versa.

Since you don't have a complete set of parts to assemble and engine, and the parts that you do have are not a match for your 164 CID engine, you may want to consider simply selling those components on eBay. If the cases are in good condition they could be used on any early model 145 CID engine. The same is true with your cylinder heads (excluding 1962 and 1963 turbocharged engines), but with the low compression ratio they will only produce a low horsepower engine. The correct camshaft would bring the horsepower up somewhat, but a 102 hp engine had a 9:1 compression ratio.

Most valvetrain components for Corvairs are interchangeable between model years. Intake valves are mostly the same with the exception of the larger 140 hp and turbocharged engine components. Valve springs varied between dual and single valve springs, depending on the horsepower configuration of the engine. The Clark's Corvair Parts online catalog can be useful in helping you to determine parts interchangeability. Just lookup the part in question and see if one part fits all or if there are special parts for different engines.
