I understand that there is a 5-speed conversion out there. Is it compatible with a '66 Saginaw? Is it any good, durability-wise?

The five-speed manual transmission you referred to was a replacement transmission that was in limited production, was problematic and expensive, and is no longer available.

There were less than 20 made. Kent Sullivan knows where most of the went or are located. Kent has stated that they have no plans to make any more.

If you're just looking for lower revs at highway speeds, you could go to a 3:08 to 1 diff ratio. That would be a lot easier than trying to adapt a five-speed transmission to your Corvair.

It certainly was not a bolt-in solution like we all wish for. The tranny sticks through the back seat and look how high the shift rod is located.

The above is what I did on my 65 Monza. I used a 62-63 4 speed for the lower first gear, and with a 3.08 diff it makes for a very nice freeway cruiser.
