140 Balancer

Post by gnrand »

I pulled my '68 140 motor and started to clean it up to reseal it. Went to pull the oil pump cover and this is what I found. No wonder why I had a difficult time with the tune. By the way I used VHT wrinkle black paint on the tins and it looks pretty good. Rated for 350F.

Here is a picture of the engine with the VHT. Silver is from Eastwood exhaust paint that I had from another project.

It looks like your balancer has failed and slipped. Common problem with old balancers. Get a new/rebuilt one. Yours has a core value.

I have another one and I am sure the engine will be happy. Yes a trade in on this balancer will be in my future.

ABSOLUTELY - Do NOT install a used harmonic damper (called balancer). They are a perishable item and as the elastic part gets hard or slips it is no longer protecting the crankshaft. Any proper engine rebuild will include a new/rebuilt harmonic damper.

I was told that if the elastic part fails and the balancer separates, it could take out the oil filter.

That engine hoist/table looks pretty good. What brand is that?

Jerry, I got it from Harbor Fright. They have a 500 lb. table and this one which is a 1000 lb. This one is so much better vs the 500 lb. that I use to use.

I don't think Clarks takes these as core return anymore. At least they did not want mine

Dale still does them and will take the cores as long as the grooves and crank seal areas aren't ruined.

The first picture below is from the 1965 Corvair Chassis Shop Manual, and shows a harmonic balancer that is found on 1964-1969 110 hp, 140 hp, and 150/180 hp turbocharged engines. The illustration points to the slip check reference mark that was placed on all harmonic balancers to help mechanics to identify harmonic balancers that are worn and failing.
Wikipedia wrote:A harmonic balancer (sometimes crankshaft damper, torsional damper, or vibration damper) is the same thing as a harmonic damper except that the balancer includes a counterweight to externally balance the rotating assembly.
:link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harmonic_damper

The second picture shows a failing harmonic balancer that has already had the outer ring slip significantly, which invalidates the timing mark that is used for setting ignition timing. Over time the outer ring will continue to slip until it eventually completely separates from the inner ring, causing the fan belt to fail and the outer ring to possibly come into contact with the oil filter — possibly damaging that and causing the oil filter to leak. The harmonic balancer should not be replaced with a solid steel pulley or solid cast pulley from an earlier Corvair engine or from the 95 hp Corvair engine found on 1964-1969 Corvairs. Harmonic balancer was added by GM engineers to protect the crankshaft in 164 CI engines. It was not deemed necessary on the earlier 140-145 CI engines from 1960-1963. But operating harmonics generated in the long stroke crankshaft in later models drove the need for installation of a harmonic balancer. (The harmonic balancer was omitted from the 95 hp 164 CI engine as an economical compromise, that was felt permissible because of the lower stress issues expected in the low performance 95 hp engine).

This shows why it is a bad idea to try to save money by purchasing a used harmonic balancer. There is no way to know how much life is left in a used harmonic balancer, as the rubber component that holds the two parts together will continue to decay with age and use. When a harmonic balancer is found to have the inner and outer rings out of register a new or remanufactured harmonic balancer should be purchased and installed as soon as possible.
