Re: Coefficient of friction
Ahhhh yes. This has become a hot topic over the years. The problem is usually described as "The pedal pressure is too high and the brakes work poorly".
With mass market auto parts stores constantly buying from the lowest price supplier what seems to work one year does not work the next. Basically the new brake material friction coefficent is not the same (too hard) as the original brake shoes. Years ago a fellow in New Mexico found a local shop that installed a "softer" lining and that worked great. I found a place that still relines brake shoes, and just as important, archs the shoes to fit the drums. They are a truck brake place, but they do hobby cars. -
Friction Materials Long Beach California, 1424 Sante Fe, Long Beach, Ca – 90813-1291
Ask for Mike who does the old car stuff.
Corvair shoes coefficent is 0.38 or FF in either plain or semi metallic.

Your best bet is to try to find a local brake relining shop, but now they are hard to find.

Re: Coefficient of friction
66vairguy...great reply. I didn't think there was any shops like that left. We do our own brake lining at our shop, but they are aircraft disc brakes. I will have to save your reply for future reference, trying real hard to get back to SoCal.

Re: Coefficient of friction
parts places dont have the information available to their employees. I used to buy the cheapest ones available that would wear faster than the high priced lifetime ones, but that strategy no longer is that good.
