my speedometer stopped working two weeks back - all of a sudden went flat. The cable broke right inside the grease cap over that covers the wheel hub. We pulled out a 1/8" speedometer cable piece out of the dust cap. It has been suggested to me to only buy a new speedometer cable, that the dust cap is fine and does not need replacing. What do you all think?

Re: replacing speedometer cable
If the dust cap has the center piece in place that has the square drive for the cable and it does not look damaged or out of place it is fine. Breakage at the drive is common when the cables get old. If you have any question replace the cap as well, new part is only $28 from Clark's.

Take the Speedo end of the broken cable out of the housing. Cut it a foot or so long. Chuck it up in a drill, put it in the back of the Speedo and run the drill backward. This will test your Speedo.
