Wrist pin ?

Post by acarlson »

How much force is required to remove a wrist pin ? Can I pop it out with a dowel and hammer or do I need a press ?

Aren't the pistons supposed to be heated first?

The pistons float on the wrist pin. The press fit is rod to pin and heating the rod is often recommended but I think not really necessary with a proper press. (there is a small press made just for this operation).

I figured that. I need to send my rod cores back to Clarks and I was hoping to avoid paying someone to press the pins. Basically I'm just cheap !!

I have ordered rods and pistons from Clark's on multiple occasions. When I do I have them mount the pistons...they do not charge much to do so when you order rods and pistons.

I did have Clarks mount the rods on the pistons but they only want the rods back.

I have sent them rods with pistons on them for core before without issue, but, you can press the pins out fairly easy on a small press, might even be able to do it on a large bench vice or with a hammer and suitable drift, I have removed them before easily on my small press but then I was not concerned about damaging the junk pistons I was removing either.

I'm going to see what shipping would be with and without pistons. Shipping rod+piston may be cheaper then paying to have pin removed plus shipping rods only.
