Steering wheel diagram

Post by skipvair »

65 corsa here. Anybody got an exploded view of what is under the wheel when you pull it off? Manual says something about a spring and centering hub. Arent there. Also, column shakes at top.

The 65 model year is confusing since the manual shows the EARLY style that was changed DURING the 1965 model year to what is called the "1966 style". If you have the later 65 style you need the 1966 shop manual supplement to show the parts.

Early 65 style was a one piece shaft from steering box to steering wheel (referred to as the chest crusher due to accident issues). The later 65 and 66 style has a two piece steering shaft with a coupler and reinforcing bracket on the outside of the bulkhead. If that isn't confusing enough the 67 design also different and used the new corporate collapsible steering column introduced on all 67 model GM cars.

The early 65 steering mast (hollow tube the shaft is in) is held by a clamp at the floor board. The late 65 & 66 steering mast is welded to a plate that bolts to the floor board (bolts go through to the reinforcing bracket).

Hope that helps.

The diagrams contained in the attached 1965 Corvair Assembly Manual - STEERING may be helpful to you.

Mine has a clamp at the floorboard. the diagram is confusing, because mine has a stock 2 spoke wheel, and the three screws go thru a plastic disc with a metal disc under it. My signals dont cancel, and there is no spring under the column. There is no telling what is in there versus what used to be.
