Blower fan notches ?

My '65 blower fan has 2 notches cut into the side of the fan radius. Is this normal or did someone cut these in to try and balance the fan ?

I did a quick look on Ebay, one fan has only one section notched & another has 3 sections notched. Must be a factory thing for balance.

Normal when new. It's thought it was done to balance the fan.

The fan currently on my 65 Corsa is exactly like yours, and it has been stated that it is a 1964 only. Corvair fans are cool...

Magnesium fans were used from 64 until 69, JUST the 64 fan has a unique center for the smaller bearing. In 65 the fan center was revised for a larger (and better) fan bearing. Due to issues with the 64 bearing failing, or slipping out of the cover, folks install the later 65 and up fan, bearing, and engine cover on 64 and earlier cars.
