TRANSMAXX 3292801 Reprogramming Kit for powerglide?

Post by JasonL »

Has anyone ever installed one of these kits onto a Corvair powerglide? Either this one or one like it?
I was wondering if it improved the shift speed or basically what changes you observed.
Rock Auto has it for $50. At that price it seems too good to be true..
Here is a link to the kit: http://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/chev ... t+kit,8532
I went to the companies website and it looks promising, but why wouldn't it? They are trying to sell them.
I searched other forums and people have used them on other classic cars and noted better performance, but I learned Corvairs are not like "others".

If you have used one of these please chime in and tell how it worked out. :tu: :td: Was it an easy install, results, value, other types, ECT...

I bought a modulator and a filter listed specifically for my '64 900 from Rock Auto. Apparently both parts are for 'big' car PGs and neither part will work on my '64 Corvair PG.

Typical shift kits for US auto transmissions can be around $50. But it seems some parts sellers assume one PG part will fit all PGs.

Unless you can find a kit from a Corvair specific seller it may not be worth your effort to buy a generic kit.

My 2 cents on the kits; modding is very personal but choosing the first step of the kit may be a good choice. The firmer steps of the kits can be quite harsh for a street car; especially a lighter car like a Corvair.

Rock Auto lists a modulator valve for a Corvair but the it looks different in the photo & it's $10.00 more than Clark's. Buy your parts from a proven vendor!!!!!!! :my02:

The only items I have found that will interchange with a normal Powerglide are the reverse clutches and steel plates and they will only interchange with the early 62-63 aluminum Powerglides.
The high clutches and plates are also the same as the early 62-63 aluminum Powerglides.
Everything else in the unit is unique to the Corvair (and 61-63 Pontiac Tempest)
