Re: turn signal won't stop flashing
Welcome to the Corvair Forum!
You might start by introducing yourself and by telling us what year and model Corvair we are discussing.
If it's a Late Model (LM — 1965-1969) Corvair, the "guts" of the turn signal switch are buried in the steering column.
There is likely a short in the turn signal switch, between "TS+" and "RF" in the above illustration. A metal strip may be bent and deformed, or a metal object may be jammed inside the switch. "TS+" normally only makes contact through the metal strips in the switch with bulbs "RF" and "RR" when the turn signal lever is actuated to turn on the right turn signals. This distorts the metal strips to establish the right turn signal contacts, while simultaneously breaking the normal contact between "B+" and "RR" (the normal brake light electrical path).

Re: turn signal won't stop flashing
Maybe so if it is a 65 or later car it is like what Brad posted above. Constantly flashing RF turn signal is an odd issue I have not seen before but it is possible the metal contact is deformed or fused to the RF post of the switch. this would cause exactly what you describe. You will need to pull the steering wheel and T/S canceling cam parts to view this part of the switch.

Re: turn signal won't stop flashing
Most likely a bad turn signal switch, but it could be someone's kludged wiring repair.
Considering the effort to get the switch out - just replace it if that's the problem.

I don't look forward to taking the adjustable steering wheel off. Any helpful hints? i have the manual. jeff

Re: turn signal won't stop flashing
OK, your car is a 1965 WITH A TELESCOPING STEERING COLUMN!Jeff Hutchinson wrote:I don't look forward to taking the adjustable steering wheel off. Any helpful hints? i have the manual...
The Clark's Corvair Parts catalog indicates that this steering column uses an expensive (more than double the price) switch! Your pricey switch still may be at fault, but it just might also be repairable. To confirm that the switch is faulty — before dismantling the steering column — you can unplug the wiring harness from the steering column and use a multimeter to check the switch (inside the steering column) functions for electrical continuity (OHMS Ω) and proper operational function between the flasher power input wire [18 PPL] and each of the front turn signal bulb output wires (as you operate the turn signal lever). You should find no electrical continuity (Ω) between the flasher power input wire plug contact [18 PPL] and each turn signal bulb output wire when the turn signal lever is OFF, and that continuity (Ω) is established to the LEFT FRONT [20 B/LBL], then RIGHT FRONT [20 DBL] output wire as you operate the turn signal lever.
If one side (right-front, in this case) continues to show electrical continuity regardless of the position of the turn signal lever, the switch is faulty and must be removed/examined to determine if it can be repaired or if it must be replaced.

Re: turn signal won't stop flashing
The 65 cars had an early standard and telescoping design that was revised during the year to a later design that was also used on the 66 models.
The good news is the turn signal switch is the same for both telescoping designs. HOWEVER the 65 shop manual only shows the early design.
To the best of my knowledge the upper part of the telescoping assembly is the same for both early and late designs.
Re: turn signal won't stop flashing
Thanks for that great info. It will help a lot.
I am not a mulitmeter genius..is there only one setting choice for reading ohms?
I won't get to it till after the weekend. I will let you know what i find out.

You might want to check over at the "corvaircenter" forum as they have a few telescoping steering column experts that post there.
