63' Spyder - Strange Engine Noise (link to audio)

Post by robotboyd »

Hi Guys,

Just drove my 63' from SF to LA. Drive was smooth with no issues. Now, when the car is just started and idiling, there's a random buzz every 10-20 seconds. I've uploaded a video to YouTube (link below). You can hear the buzz noise first around 00:10, then a few short ones at 00:27, 00:48, 01:00, and 01:20.

Does anyone know what this is? I don't hear anything while driving or while idiling after being driven. I haven't had time to take it to the mechanic yet.

Thanks for the help!

Sounds like a dry or failing blower bearing.

If the noise is associated with a bearing (fan, idler or generator) and it recurs frequently, you should be able to remove the fan belt and run the engine for a short period of time to see if the sound has been eliminated. A mechanic's stethoscope (or a suitable substitute, as described in the video below) can help you to isolate the specific source of the noise. These stethoscopes are listed on Amazon.com for about $7.00 - $20.00.

sounds like a voltage regulator buzzing? get your ear that that & see if the buzz is coming from it.

with a cold engine....remove the fan belt. run the engine w/o the fan belt for a minute or so. if the buzz isnt there then its prob not coming from the engine but from something else..............like something hooked up to the fan belt.

Update: I ordered a mechanic's stethoscope, but I haven't heard any buzz/howl since the weekend; even when starting the engine cold. After some more digging, I'm guessing it is a fan bearing "howl." I've found quite a few threads on this after seeing the recommendations above. Thanks for the quick help!

Someone else posted this audio clip of a fan bearing that's going bad... Sounds like mine:
