Speedo connection on 64 Greenbrier

Post by Jerp »

realized the speedo wasn't working because it wasn't connected at the transmission. For the life of me I can't find where it connects. It's driving me nuts and my manual is at work. Am I missing something that's right in front of my face? Can anyone point me in the right direction? I feel like maybe i'm missing a part, because it shouldn't be this hard to locate. Any help is appreciated!

I believe that the speedo connector is on the differential, not the transmission.

It attaches to the left side of the diff above and forward of the axle.

I looked and it is one of the pictures of Richard Widman's 1960 Corvair in South America. It does seem to match the poor-quality images shown in the 1961 Shop Manual...

I've been around Corvairs since 1961 (I was 8 years old), but I have never seen one with a 3-speed transmission. I guess they were rarely purchased in that configuration, judging by the lack of recogntion here on the Corvair Forum!

Thanks for the replies! It looks like, for the moment, i'm not insane. This is what i'm looking at, and the passenger side for good measure. I guess the question now is...WTF? What is this diff from?

In the 1965+ models, GM moved the speedo connection to the drivers side front wheel hub. Maybe you've got an LM diffy.

That is a late model differential. I can see in your photos that there are 4 holes on each lower side and bottom to accept the late model car strut rod mounting brackets. Earlier differentials pre 65 had no such holes. The problem is you have no way to drive your speedo with this diff. Unfortunately the latest FC (1965 Greenbriers) still used the early style differential so there are likely no readily available parts to install a drive in the left front wheel like used in the 65 and later cars. the solution , unfortunately, is to change the differential out for an earlier unit (or use a GPS as your speedo perhaps).

You guys are truly and encyclopedia of Corvair knowledge. Many thanks! Now

WHO WANTS TO BUY A 64 GREENBRIER...j/k...i think...

There's a 61 in a scrap yard about an hour north. Getting the ujoints off is no problem, how hard would it be to pull that diff out when it's sitting in a field? I'd have to take the trans with it, yes?

He means engine and transaxle as a unit. You may need the transmission as well. I expect that the one you have will mount to the replacement diff, but, if the price is cheap get the entire3 transaxle just in case. (I would tell the I need the entire transaxle and if the price is unreasonable then perhaps tell them you only really need the rear part of it:) ) Many junk yards I have seen would charge similar money for the transaxle whole or just the diff.
