LM Brake hold down springs ?
LM Brake hold down springs ?
I am rebuilding the brakes on my Corsa. I have Clark's spring kits for the front and rear. I have some questions about the hold-down springs.
Question #1: There are 2 different hold down springs - one with a tapered end that is pretty stiff and one with flat ends which is not-so-stiff. Which spring goes on which shoe ?
Question #2: There are 2 different retainers for the springs - one with a deep well for the pin and one shallow well for the pin: Which retainer goes with which spring ?
Question #3: Clark's spring kit includes 2 shim's/washers and 2 c-clips: I'm pretty sure I know where the shim/washer goes (but I'll ask anyway) and I have no clue where the clip goes. The existing brakes did not have either installed.
Thanks -
Alec

I believe the one without the taper goes into the cup for the brake self adjuster arm/lever.

Re: LM Brake hold down springs ?
OK - I finally found a source for mid 60's brakes on the net. Here's the answers to my questions. I will assume they are correct until someone says otherwise.
The flat sided spring goes in the cup which holds the self adjuster as toytron said. The shallow well retainer holds it in place.
The tapered spring goes on the other shoe and is held in place using the deep well retainer.
The shim goes on the end of the adjuster wheel under the end cap.
The c-clip is not used on the LM Corvair. On other model cars it is used to hold a pin in place. The adjuster bracket rotates on the pin. The LM brakes don't have that pin.

Not correct. The little washer in the photo is not a shim but is likely the little washer that is supposed to be under the tapered hold down spring. The C-clip is for E-brake lever attachment. The rest is correct and the is a shim like washer under the rotating part of the adjuster assy ...the hole would be larger than the washer in the photo.
Corvair guy since 1982. I have personally restored at least 20 Vairs, many of them restored ground up.

Yes, the c-clip is for the parking brake lever but not used in LM corvairs.
Here is the shim/washer image:
I asked Clarks to clarify where the parts go. I'll report back when I get a reply.
