Oil level after change

Post by gbullman »

I have a stock 140 HP engine in my 66. This has happened every oil change but yesterday was a little unique because I didn’t take it out for a ride immediately after changing the oil and filter, I let it idle a bit and then turned it around to put it in the garage.

I filled the oil filter with fresh oil before installing it and then filled the crankcase with 4 quarts. Per the shop manual that should have just filled it but it is reading between an 1/8 and 1/4 quart overfilled. Is that common? To best of my knowledge the car still has its original dipstick so I believe that is correct.

Not a big deal as it uses some oil and the level will drop. Just curious if others have the same or similar experience.

Does you dipstick still have the rubber like gasket in the part that slips over the dipstick tube? I recall that if the rubber gasket is gone or deteriorated (often the case) it will let the dipstick sit a little lower.

As far as the factory fill amounts, hard to say how accurate they are. I always fill to about the full mark or a little less.

If the car is not level that will also change dipstick indications.

There is still visible rubber, what is accessible is quite hard and seems to be intact. Can’t see down into cup very well so hard to tell whether is is complete inside.
