dropped the front end of my 64 2''

Post by 64vert »

mike and me cut a coil and a half out of the front springs and got just under 2" lower. love it! the center of the front wheel wells were right at 24 7/8" off the floor and the rears were 23 3/4", now the fronts are at 22 7/8". no more feeling like im lookin up over the hood. between the spoiler and this it handles a ton better too (looks cool too :chevy: ) cruised around for a couple hours...the sun was out, had my wife and grandson with me, it was great!

Watch out for bumps. I dropped my 65 nearly 2" the same way. I loved it as well. I works fine except for bottoming out every now and then on some bumps...mostly at speed and bumps with relatively sharp edges (pavement ends for instance).

Hey Ted,
on your '65 did you then cut the bump stops on the shocks? I lowered my '65 and I love the way it sits but it bottoms on the bump stops and rides very stiff up front.

Of course:) I used only a short piece sawsall to the rescue. The car rode great all the time just had to watch for sharp holes/bumps that would put it into the stop. I cut one coil exactly and heated down the ends for a flat fit like factory.

I doubt it, perticularly it you are using the original springs. I have heard people talk of springs settling after install of new drop springs. Perhaps this is true. I have cut a number of original springs and never had one settle.

Here's a pic of the 62 vert that my son and I built while he was in high school and a college freshman. Has 64 front suspension with a coil cut off front and rear. VERY low, have to drive it up on 2x4s to get a jack under it. Quick steering arms, drives great and handles like a go kart on steroids. Currently up on stands for a front disc and FC rear axle/late model rear brake install, as well as a new turbo motor with E-Flow and DCOE 45 weber. Only problem with this car is that it keeps me from working on my 66 180 vert and my 64 Spyder coupe!

I make disc brakes for the front and rear of earlies and I can make drop spindles for them.
