My build 1965 Coupe 140/4spd

Post by snddrafting »

I had been looking for a late model Corvair for awhile and I found this 65 Monza 140/4spd on April 4th 2009. I bought it and brought her home. This is my first Corvair and I love it already. I have a lot of work to do as she has sat for several years. Here is some pics.

I have bought two sets of wheels, one I like but its too wide and one I don't like as much, but they fit. I have rebuilt my carbs, started rebuilding the brake system, installed new door hinges, new air filter elements, got keys finally, installed new plugs and wires, new top gasket, and a few other parts that I cant remember at the moment cuz its 1:30AM. Here are some pics.

Carbs...before and after comparison

Wheels I like but they rears are too wide. I ended up selling them and I made a $150.00 profit on them to boot! :)

These are what I have on it now. 17x7 all four corners.
235/40/17 rear. 205/40/17 front.

Brakes are done, new steering wheel in, motors running, wheels on and it's sitting in my driveway now instead of the backyard!

After I got the air cleaners painted and put back on. I was going to polish them but they are too thin and too rough.

I drove it to the gas station for the very first time. I got a Thumbs up from an old guy in a pickup truck and a shout of "SWEET!" from a guy on a bicycle.

I checked the tranny fluid and had to put about 28oz in. It shifts a little better but I have to either be really gentle and/or double clutch it to get it into 3rd and 4th without it complaining to me. One of our fellow club members has offered to give me another tranny...I Love Corvair people!!!

I took my 13yr old daughter to the grocery store in it tonight too. I loved walking out of the store and seeing the Corvair and knowing it was mine! My daughter thinks it is cool too.

The motor is still ticking, and the knock is still there and doesn't go away when I push in the clutch so I am not sure what it is yet. I fear the worst. :(

I am loving this car though. :)

I know this is a bit premature in the whole "fixing up my car" order of things but since I ran out of any extra money and I already had all of the pieces for it, so I installed the stereo system.

It consists of a Classic Autosound two knob retro style head unit.
An old-school D-Class Alpine V12 amp.
Two 6x9 Clarion component speakers with passive crossovers.
One Infinity Reference 10" dual voice coil sub woofer.
I used some of the material I bought to do the seats and door panels to cover the box.

I am running the sub bridged at 2 ohms on Channel 3 and the components as channels 1 and 2 on the amp.
The head unit came with an aux input that I have my iPod hooked up to.

I am pretty impressed with the sound considering it's only a single sub and its under powered but I am happy.

Wow, you even posted the 'as-found' shots too!

Looks like it's coming along well.

I'm thinking of posting a thread on my '65 Convertible project and might as well start with
the as-found shot.

Thanks for the inspiration, Mel

OK, project update (FINALLY!).
Got the old motor out last night. It has a cracked flywheel (see pic).
Tonight we are going to put the new motor in and then my old motor will get a freshening up and be put into a '64 Coupe as a surprise gift for my Dad. ::-): :tu:

Right on!!.....hey, great minds think alike! It must be "pulling 'vair motors season". I took today off and "did a few things around the house". Boohahahahaha.....I declared war on engine and trans oil leaks and non-boosting turbos. I hope I can get this thing up and going in less than 2 months. You know what happens when you start "inspecting" this and that.....it turns into a complete rebuild. My first tip-off on this project was that my trans oil wasn't touching the dipstick.
