Saved a turbo corsa

Post by 126hotel »

Hey guys well here it is not bad for a car that was headed to the bone yard . It's a 1965 turbo Corsa the # on the block are TOII2RL & the # on heads are 3813513 . This is my first turbo car. Well for sure it needs the heads & the turbo & other things that I'm not sure off. Like I said I never owed a turbo Corvair but always wanted one. I would love any tips & advice on how the get all I need to make it a complete fast turbo again.

What a diamond in the rough! As long as your credit card is fresh, you'll be good to go! Try to get the stamped numbers off the distributor, just to see if it's a correct turbo type.

That scraped-off layer of crud around the engine I.D. number does tell a tale of a hard life!

Image

Looks like this will be a great project! :tu:

If the turbo system is missing, I wonder if this engine would be a good candidate for Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) and a Distributorless Ignition System (DIS); (plus perhaps a little machine work on the heads to raise the compression ratio a bit). It is just a thought, but considering the expense of bringing a factory turbo system and carburetor back "home", maybe a modern EFI w/DIS system would produce a better result. Although the outcome would not be "original" the resulting street performance, reliability, etc. would certainly produce a unique restored Corsa! Since I hope to pursue this path for my own 1966 Corsa (140 HP 4x1), i just thought I'd toss the concept "into the ring" for this restoration project. :think: ::-):

The distributor part number list I have seems to confirm it. The distributor is from a 1962 Monza Powerglide vehicle. :td: Your core engine and heads may be from a turbo, but everything else seems to have been downgraded.

TOII2RL

T = Tonawanda
Tonawanda (formally City of Tonawanda, from Tahnawá•teh meaning "confluent stream" in Tuscarora) (Cayuga: Tganawai) is a city in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 15,130 at the 2010 census. It is located at the northern edge of Erie County, south across the Erie Canal (Tonawanda Creek) from North Tonawanda, and north of Buffalo, New York. It is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls metropolitan area.

The Tonawanda Engine plant, located in Buffalo, New York, is one of the largest engine producing facilities in the world. In 2008, close to 750,000 engines were manufactured at the facility. The local UAW is Local 774.

As most Corvair engine builders know, all the engines were built in Tonawanda, N.Y., a town between Niagara Falls and Buffalo. The GM factory produced an average of 1,200 Corvair engines every day in 1964.

All Corvair engines were manufactured at the GM Engine Plant in Tonawanda, NY, so all engine codes begin with the letter "T".

0112 = January 12

RL = 1965-66 180 HP Turbocharged Corsa w/Manual Transmission

So the bottom end of the engine (short block) is from a 164 CI Turbocharged 1965-66 Corsa. However, the cylinder heads are not! The head number you provided indicates that these heads are from a 1962-63 80 HP 145 CI engine with the correct volume for an 8:1 compression ratio. I'm not sure what those heads would give you on a 164 CI engine. The correct cylinder head casting numbers for a 1965-66 164 CI 180 HP Turbocharged engine would have been: 3856756, 3856762, 3878564, or 3883860. All of these Turbo heads produced a compression ratio of 8:1, but they had dual valve springs and the right head was drilled for an oil return line from the turbocharger lubrication system. Wherever the turbocharger and carburetor went, apparently the heads and distributor went with it.

Also, there would have been a mismatch between the outside diameter of the Late Model (LM) cylinder barrels, and the bore size of the Early Model (EM) heads. The EM heads may have had to be machined to accept the LM cylinder barrels. I doubt that the cylinder barrels from the 1962-63 engine were transferred, since they were on a 145 CI engine. The LM barrels not only had a larger outside diameter where they mate with the LM heads, but they are notched at the bottom to clear the 164 CI crankshaft and connecting rod angles.

Yes they are 180 turbo heads. If your cars build date is around 1A the engine is original.

Funny, the chart in the CORSA Corvair Technical Guide does not have that cylinder head casting number.
3878568 (I cannot make out the last digit in your photographs to confirm).
Corvair Cylinder Head Numbers 2.jpg
The correct cylinder head casting numbers for a 1965-66 164 CI 180 HP Turbocharged engine (according to the chart) would have been: 3856756, 3856762, 3878564, or 3883860.

Physical clues of a Turbo cylinder head are missing vacuum connecting tubes on each intake manifold pad. (All non-turbo engines with conventional carburetors had these tubes for the connection of a balance tube between the heads. Turbo engines did not use a balance tube). Also, the right cylinder head has an opening in the valve cover area for the turbocharger oil return tube. All non-turbo heads would not have this opening.

Note: 1964 110 heads need to be used with 1964 110 cylinders, or machined to fit newer cylinders.
If you are planning to clean up the mating surfaces, or if you're going with 94mm VW cylinders,
the additional machining required shouldn't be an issue, as you'll have machining to do anyway.
