Made some new progress, basic engine parts are on or prepared, Oil cooler in place.


the lifters are in the oil ready for instalation (probably next week). after that we are foing to install the rocker arms and the other little parts. i think 2 more evenings work and we have most of the parts installed.

Looks like good process Ralf. I don't know if you planned it but technically your heads are on backwards. The large tubes at the base of the carb. pads should be pointing towards the front of the car. They can be swapped on the car because other than that the heads are interchangeable.

Yes, heads are on backwards. There are plugs that can be removed and the tubes removed as well, and re-inserted.. but since you haven't started it yet, maybe swap the heads and re-torque.

You have completed so many complex steps in performing this restoration! Placing the heads on the wrong side is an easy oversight that might not have been discovered until the engine was back in its nest and you began re-installing the vacuum balance tube! You are certainly not the first!!

This is partially what the Corvair Forum is for... to help each other with tips and to point out oversights like this. It is one of those things you watch out for after you make the same mistake (or almost make the same mistake) when reassembling a Corvair engine.

Great work! And watch out for those push rods to ensure they are inserted correctly — with the side oil passage on the rocker arm end!

Allright, 1 step back, switching the heads

Did install the pushrod tubes (with seals), lifters, rockerarm, and all the others parts that hold it together.
Nice evening job, and all fits well happy me, ready to fine tune the rockerarms.

Got a good evening with lots of progress

And put the bellhouse in place

and finaly the engine is almost closed

And we got some fresh dirt off the powertrain, a good 8.5 lbs of dirt was coming off. I bet it will go faster now. Soon we are going to check the diff and PG.

Painted a lot of things again so when they are dry, they can put on the engine block

Thats for now, soon fine tuning the engine (and put the little things on it)

Allright we did a lot last day, we adjust all the valves and it seems all working (fingers crossed when we fire up the engine someday)

Beside that we closed heads woth the valve covers and we put the manifolds on, engine is getting there

beside that we checked the differential and we put the pan from the PG. Both looks really fine (i'm glad, but when i store those unit it ran fine in the car) so beside cleaning and putting new seals and gaskets on it, are these to done. i'm not looking forward to rebuild a PG, looks to complex, i have another PG in my little workshop, so i can always when this project is done do a rebuilt to learn in and we can switch it if it is needed.

But what i said, it drove good before storing, and it looks good now, so fresh new oil on it little bit of cleaning and paining and these 2 are done (the 1st parts that are not completely rebuild )

Well i'm back working on the corvair. Did the month june almost nothing, except ordering parts, July was vacaton month and pick up parts month. Corvair Convention was great! had a good time and was awesome to see everybody again! hope i can come back soon.
