I use Amsoil and since I have to buy it in case lots, I don't wish to waste it. :/ Plus, it messes up my beautiful engine compartment!!!

Clark's fiber washers are the right size, so I bought 6, along with a new bolt for me, and to replace the one I immediately lost for Rip Sawyer. Next up, I just got a cheap Harbor Freight 0-28" HG vacuum / 0-10 PSI pressure gauge to see what kind of fuel pressures my mechanical pump is delivering. That will happen tomorrow, after I get outta work. Night work next 3 nights, more upgrades to our high speed internet product, kind of a victim of our own success, which really is a good problem to have. Job security makes me feel better, going on 20 years this December at TCI/AT&T Broadband/Comcast.
Back on topic.. I'll take bits of the pressure spring off if I discover I have too much pressure, hopefully I won't have the problem another person had on CorvairCenter, which was 10PSI...cut some...7PSI... cut some more...0 PSI...
My plans are to convert to electric pump that can deliver 45PSI for EFI (way down the line unless I discover a rich uncle I didn't know I had) and a regulator/return line system that I can dial down to 3-3.5 for my carbs. I also want to put in the mechanical pump "blanking plate" that just routes the fule through while maintaining a relatively stock appearance.
But, I'd prefer to do that later, and just get my mechanical pump where it belongs for now.

Ok, high fuel pressure, above 7 PSI. Cut spring twice, still near or slightly above 5. Now won't idle. Fuel no longer dumping in past needle and seat. Idle mixture adjustment corrected failure to idle, part throttle miss still present. Made the decision to convert to Airtex E8016s electric pump. Got pump plate block-off and some new fuel lines and fittings from Clark's.

Last-minute notice, I found out about Corvairs NW holding their annual spring tune-up at Sunset Chevrolet in Sumner, WA....a 4.5 hour drive when not towing. I got a pickup from a neighbor, tow trailer from U-Haul, and hoped my parts order from Clark's showed up in time.
Image
Last Saturday night, all loaded up to drive 130+ miles into Washington! I also had a Cub Scouts event Saturday night, so I didn't get to bed until after 9 PM. Up again at 3AM to get on the road by 3:30.
Image
Gotta fill up the fuel eater, but beats having to rent one.. it's 3:30 AM in Springfield, Oregon
Image
Dawn breaks in Chehalis, WA... only about 40 miles to go.. needed to be there before 9AM to maximize available time, it ends at 4 PM.
Image
Our workspace for the day, the service bay at Sunset Chevrolet. Soon to be filled with 26 Corvairs and a few other classics as well.
Image
Just about ready to lift her up and put in the electric fuel pump, thankfully all my parts arrived from Clark's Saturday, so I was able to put in fuel pump blanking plate, to maintain the stock look and no chance of dumping gas into my crankcase anymore.
Image
New fuel pump install complete, but an issue with my install of new front brake shoes added about 45 minutes of unplanned time to my work schedule, blame the idiot who put the shoes on wrong (me) when getting car back on road last March.
Image
Going through the carbs with Roland Martin after a good BBQ lunch took the edge off. Still couldn't get the new Clark's carb to function properly... it stopped leaking at fuel inlet nut, but no accelerator pump squirt..

Anyway, time ran out before I was able to get the fine tuning done on the carbs. But, electric fuel pump install done, front brakes sorted out, and some pretty new fuel lines and stuff in engine compartment. After another roughly 5 hour drive home that night, back in the garage.
I also found that the pitman arm shaft seal has failed, and needs replacing. I got a pitman arm puller and the replacement seal, I hope it's just the seal and not the box itself... More to come.

Wow, that is looking like good fun there. I think I would've definitely needed my reading glasses to do carb work now. So, you never did get a squirt out of that carb?? Hope the bore is okay down in there and not corroded up. Now I wanna check out my steering box!

Ok, been slacking... we had our cars near "Tow Mater" of CARS fame, so lots came by and saw our 3 Vairs.. good times, indoor show so the rain didn't dampen the fun.

Sexy! Sporting the new banner I got from one of the fine peeps on Corvair Center.
Image
The rain was falling when all the trailer queens needed to start packing up.. I turned on my wipers and drove her home.
After a bit more driving with new electric fuel pump, started noticing some drips of oil in engine compartment, found that the pieces of my old fuel pump that my new blank were sandwiched between weren't a perfect seal, allowing oil splashed up through the hole in the casting that the pump rod extended through to puddle up and slowly leak out, to be thrown all over the place by the balancer and the air flow. I took it all apart, and filled the hole with JB Weld. No more oil leak. I then found a small fuel leak at the passenger side primary carb, tightening the inlet nut and te-tightening the fuel line fixed that. I've been driving it to work all this week and last night, the local club met and we had 6 Vairs show up...

LMs ruled the roost last night. :)

Here it is in my driveway, ready to take on the grueling 7 mile trip to work....

I'll be driving it all the rest of this week, and showing it in the Bethel Boosters show at Willamette high school (class of 79!!) this coming Saturday. I need to put my new roof rail weatherstrip in the sun tonight to warm up and uncurl, and glue the new stuff in after removing the old. Also re-finishing the splatter paint in the trunk.

Driving it to work this week, except yesterday when I was running late. I missed the Saturday show, wife and daughter off primping while I hung out at home with the 8 year old boy. No big deal though, just 1 problem... the more I drive it, the more I want to drive it... I guess that's a good problem to have, though. I'm sporting Rafee carb base gaskets from last year's COTM win. :)

Drove her again today, in the same spot too... love that afternoon shade since my A/C package consists of WD-40 (Windows down, 40 MPH) She goes back in the garage tonight while we leave for vacation...

Drove her to my son's baseball practice last night, fooled a guy who thought it was a 66 or later cause I have the "sexier" late 66-69 tail/reverse light lenses. I'm thinking that when I can afford to get her painted, I'll move the front Corvair script to the nose and off the trunk and mess with people's minds even more... "Mu-wa-ha-ha-ha!!"

It's "Return of the oil leak"... found a drip on the floor, looks like it might be the oil pump bolt again, just dealt with a coolant leak in my DD Ford Escort, thread sealant didn't do the trick, this time used Teflon tape on the Ford, and have to support the engine in the rear and remove the air grille, some tin and the rear motor mount bracket to assess where the oil is coming from. If I can't stopper it up, I will probably need a "new" rear housing since the oil pump housing is integral. I'll have to find a rear housing for a 140 with the little metal tab riveted on that goes beyond 18 BTDC.

I went to my club meeting last night, one of the members had a rear housing off a turbo engine with the 24 degree mark on it... needs a thorough cleaning and the oil pump checked out, he even had the gaskets! All I need are the gasket set with different thicknesses, and the harmonic balancer pulley seal. I'm going to get help setting up the oil pump though, never done one before.

I have cleaned the "new" rear housing, and inspected the pump gears...some pitting, and since I'm going to have Regan Metcalf, prez of Corsa Oregon blueprint and re-machine the pump housing, why not get new ones, right? I mean, it's kinda important to have a properly sized, correctly working oil pump. So, Clark's is sending the oil pump directly to Portland, and I'm shipping off my new rear housing today. Should get 'er back late next week or early the week after. He'll weld over the idler gear shaft hole, eliminating that as a potential leak spot, and re-machine the bottom plate and the mating surface for optimum flatness and clearances. I'll throw some more thread sealer or a bit of teflon tape on the leaky bolt on my current rear housing and hope to stopper it up for a couple more weeks until I get 'er back. Trying to be ready to drive it in the Harrisburg 4th of July parade with my brother's boys and my son while they are visiting.
