They say a picture is worth a thousand words..., but in this case I think one will suffice. "Yes," it looks like you will have to remove the oil filler tube. I wonder if it was an "Ohhhh...," moment on the initial assembly line? Or, did they put the whole power pack/suspension in at one time and if they angled the rear 'up and back' it might have gone in with it installed??? Are you sure that isn't a "710" cap?
Back when I worked auto parts, I would hear of people that came into the stores looking for a 710 cap which often confused the uneducated parts counter idiots......

Tom, make sure the oil is drained when you pull the filler/dipstick tube. I got in a hurry on my last engine pull and forgot. What a mess. They at least made it easy to pull with just one bolt holding it in.
Any plan to run AC in the wagon? If so you may need to notch the tube for just a tiny bit of clearance.

Sam, yes AC in the near future. I have the mount and was going to mock it up before I put in car to check for clearance. Thanks for the suggestion. I believe I will need to raise the whole mount for the compressor for belt to clear if I remember correctly.....

I am still waiting to do a full mock up on mine but I had the compressor mounted and I do not have much room to go up. I got a second fill tube to modify if needed. I will be interested to see what your mock up looks like. Have you decided on a condenser size and placement? I am still on the fence about the best way to go.

I have talked to a ac engineer who works for mahle, going oversized will not hurt performance. So I’m going to put the largest I can fit in the trunk floor.

Nice work on the exhaust system Tom. Looks like they are safety wired .Reminds me of my days in USAF as a jet engine mechanic. Most every bolt had to be safety wired.

The original manifolds had the little butterflies to keep the nuts in place. They would not work here so I had the safety wire stuff so why not. Do not want to get an exhaust leak and send into the cabin.

I spent an early 20's Summer getting raw fingers at Talley Corp. that assembled aircraft parts (like canopy actuators). We had to safety wire all the screws. It took some learning because the tension had to be such that it pulled (or at least held) the screw in the tightened position and the wire did likewise with successive screws. It wasn't a matter of just running the wire through the hole. There were times when it was a tough call as to the wire going 'this way..., or that.' Lastly we had to cut the wire and tuck it in such a way that if the Inspector ran his finger over it the sharp end would not snag his finger. If it did (or he just determined it was run wrong) he would cut it and we would have to start all over again.

Put in the light weight flywheel, clutch ,pressure plate and a distributor together. Getting closer to break it in. Seth's wires, Roger's throttle linkage will be here shortly and the custom exhaust then I should be ready.

Fabbed the toughest part of the crossover out of stainless. (not going to win any "stack of dimes" contest. ) But I know its welded properly, purged internally and should hold up. Also, on the stand before the oil is in, with the engine upside down made it much easier. Just have the last bits to add when I get the muffler. I am going to use a stock turbo muffler and hopefully I can fit the pipe out the stock wagon cutout. It will be close, the opening is almost 3" and the turbo muffler is 2.5 out. I could neck it down to 2.25 or even 2. All the piping is 2" into the muffler so I don't think it would be a restriction.
