My 64 - here I go
My 64 - here I go
Well, assuming this car comes through, all indications say it will, I have my first question. When strapping it down to the trailer, is there particular recommended hook points? If it matters, all I know about it so far is it is a hardtop 2-door.

First, back the car onto the trailer so the weight distribution is better. If you are using chain/straps attach at the front and rear crossmember. Some trailers have attach webbing that cradle the wheel and tires. I believe that is what a U-Haul trailer has for tie downs. Not sure if you have your own trailer. If you are renting a trailer from U-Haul tell them you are transporting a Mustang not a Corvair if they ask. Good luck with your new vair.

The right way to do it is with the proper body hooks like they used to ship it from the factory. There are 3 common ones and I don't remember which one works because mine have all three hooks. Mine are RTJ hooks. The R, T and J are the three different styles.
There are oval holes in the body the hooks fit into. IIRC the '60 and some '61s don't have the oval holes.
You can also loop through the control arms with nylon straps made for that. This picture has flat snap hooks. I like the 90 degree snap hooks better.

Good point on backing it on, my brain hadn’t computed that. I will look for those holes.

Re: My 64 - here I go
It is about balance and proper tongue weight. On my 16' flatbed I put Corvairs on front first with the bumper almost touching the front rail. If I put one on backwards I have to shift it back quite a bit to get the balance right. I don't know on a U-Haul trailer since I've never used one.
If you do tow it backwards be sure the windshield gasket is good enough to hold the glass in. It can blow out if you leave the windows down.

Got it yesterday evening, will post more pics, probably later today after I get home. Pretty rough in areas. Three tires would hold air, one just long enough to push it around. Used AAA to move it. I am pretty sure it used to be black and looks like a cream interior.

Black with cream interior is an awesome combo. Looks like a nice starting place.
