AM/FM Multiplex

Post by plrgpr »

I’ve been told by the person who owned my car in 1980 that it began life with the AM/FM Multiplex unit and, in fact, was in place when he sold the car. Now it has a crappy am/fm but still had these speaker grills which the previous owner says says are correct for the option and are quit rare and valuable, especially the rear speaker boxes in the convertible top well. Can anyone confirm that and if so, anyone know where there might be a multiplex units? Here are pics of the speaker boxes and grills.

It would be nice to know what year the car is since the "multiplex" stereo equipment changed during the Corvair run.

In 1966 all indications are that it was ONLY a dealer installed option, no factory RPO. It's installation is shown in the Chevrolet dealer accessories manual. The real value is in the multiplex unit that goes under the radio. Yes the front speakers went in the door and the rears went in enclosures in 1966. The 1966 model year did use different rear speaker enclosures for the convertible vs. the coupe or sedan (4 door). Not sure on other years. The rear speaker enclosures are desirable, but not sure how valuable as they can be duplicated by someone with sheet metal skills.

If you had all the equipment, including the multiplex unit and matching FM radio, it would probably find a buyer who wanted an original setup.

A working copy of an original Late Model Corvair AM/FM radio is both rare and expensive. The add-on external stereo multiplex decoder is even more rare, and also expensive. The multiplex stereo option was discontinued in 1968. The sound quality, tuner sensitivity, etc. would be mediocre, at best. Here are a couple of current eBay examples...

 Those high prices for the rare AM/FM Late Model Corvair radio are not unusual. I've seen similar prices on many eBay offerings in the past.
