My advice is don't be scared of it. Have a book and follow instructions. I rebuilt my first one at 17 years old. Probably just got lucky, but it went 200K miles before another (just re-ringed it, used plastigauge for bearing tolerances and installed new bearings. Everything checked out ok to do it that way. Used a book for procedures and understood procedures.

Thanks guys-I'm just excited to try it. Still stuggling with time and some odds and ends. I modified an aftermarket distributor clamp to work and made up some wiring.

The fuel inlet is simply painted blue. It had been painted red when I found it.

Can't wait!

Well Daddy, I like the contrast between the blue and the unpainted lines.

Re: Cleaning Garage and Corsa for Work-140 Motor Progress

Unread post by GasDaddy140 » Fri May 19, 2017 10:07 am

Hi Corvairs! As I await the arrival of my 3rd used 12 row oil cooler (2 for 2 leak) to finally test run my 140 engine, I'm cleaning up my assorted messes in the garage so that I can "think" and actually work again. My cat is fond of my Corvair, and the garage in general, I think it likes the greasy smells. After work today all the household junk in the front will be cleared. And then, I wait for the mailman.

The 3rd oil cooler didn't leak! Buying a battery and cables tomorrow, Indy 500 Day. It's a good day.

Hi, me and a couple car guys gave it a mighty effort, but the 140 didn't fire yet. Gas leaking out of the fuel pump I tried to rebuild and timing and valve adjustment issues I think. I received a new fuel pump from Summit today! Have to get a couple of fittings and get after it again. These Corvairs engine-tests aren't for the meek you know. Battery and hot wires hanging all over. We only stopped trying to start it because I thought we all would catch on fire.
Hope to update again soon!

That's what I'm talking about!

By the way, where did you get your non-leaking oil cooler from? Or, maybe a better question is, where did your leaky ones come from?

Hey Joe Farmer-glad you enjoyed seeing my Corvair motor burn a little gas! Today is tuning day, my timing is off, and I'll adjust in the carbs and RPM.
I found a lot of 8 row coolers new on eBay for good prices. I went for a needed 12 row from John's Corvair Parts (small time, I think) in PA. He was awesome! I almost forgot about the two oil spouting coolers until you brought it up...let's just let me try to forget again ;)

My 15 year old son helped a lot. We used a motorcycle lift to place the engine. Getting it off the high work table was a little touchy.

My 15 year old son helped a lot getting these springs, stabilizers and torque arms in place. I was swearing too much too. I assembled the passenger side wrong 3 times! Damn-it...Got the driver's side right though. A lot of new bushings and hardware is used. Ordered the red Gabriel's for the rear.
Soon I'll burn some gas in this sophisticated 1965 crate. I'll shift it hard if I feel like it too. I'll bang the damn gears if I want.
I really like blue paint.
