What are the best tires to put on 14" Rally rims?
What are the best tires to put on 14" Rally rims?
I have a 65 Monza 4DR with 13" stock wheels. I recently got a good deal on a set of Chevy/GM 14 x 7 rally rims w caps and trim rings. They are used (came off a 1969 Camaro) but in beautiful shape. What are the best tires (brand, size) for this application? I'm open to all suggestions (low profile? performance? I want the car to look somewhat fast, even though its a 4DR) and where is the best place to buy the tires? Thank you!!

The Goodyear Eagle RWL tires shown below are no longer made. If you like the look of raised white letter tires, you might check out the near-equivalent tires in BF Goodrich at the Tire Rack...

Re: What are the best tires to put on 14" Rally rims?
Going4joe - You didn't mention mention the rally wheel backspace. The 69 Camaro got several different types of rally wheels depending on brakes, options, etc. When you say 7" wide I assume you mean from bead to bead (not rim to rim edge which would be about 8"). There was also a 6" wide (7" rim to rim edge) 69 rally wheel.
I have an original set Camaro Kelsey Hayes code "YJ" wheels that are 14X7" with a 4.5" backspace. If you want to keep the same rolling circumference (I did to make the speedometer accurate and keep RPM down on the highway) the 205/70X14 is almost identical in rolling diameter (rolling circumference) as the old 7.00X 13 tire. It also is about the smallest tire you can put on a 7" wide rim. A 195X14/70 is more suited to a 6" wide rim. I run BF Goodrich tires as they still make this size.
BTW - I run the 205/70X14 on the front only. On the back you have more room for a wider tire and the 235/60X14 is just slightly smaller than the diameter of the 7.00 X 13 tire and the 245/60X14 is just slightly bigger. I run the 245/60X14 on the rear with a 2.37 gear and my car goes fine and it keeps the engine noise down on the highway due to reduced RPM. If you want want more off the line go, then the 3.55 gear and the 235/60X14 is a better choice.
