65ish Corsa Automatic

Post by SteveH »

I just bought this 65 Corsa (that looks suspiciously like a 66) which was converted to a PG Automatic

The bendix on the starter is failing but it still starts and it will not idle long because one of the driver side carbs has a stuck float (or some other reason that it is just DUMPING fuel into the head) I have the 4 carbs off of my Field Find 65 Corsa and am rebuilding two tonight. This should let me get the car running enough to get me home.

These are the 140's from "Field Find"

I think I can spot the one that had the first round of cleaning. I picked up a pair of rebuild kits today (they only had two) and am hoping to get both finished being rebuilt this evening

The DMV today was a joy.... It is an expired reg, out of state car. always a challenge. I now have a moving permit for one day (of my choice) so I can drive it to the DMV for VIN verification. THEN they will put it in my name and give me Cal plates and stickers. Sigh.

It does look like a 66 in that pic. Does it have the mystery air box in the back and the slanted voltage regulator?

In 65, the voltage regulator was mounted at an angle. Also 65-only, a fresh air intake planned for the heater box was not used and got capped with a small rectangular steel lid. You won't see either of those in 66 and up.

This engine is far from stock but it does show those two items.

I think I am going to call this carb shot.... The support posts for the float are half missing due to corrosion.

Anyone got a spare secondary for sale?

I have a spare. No idea if it's a secondary or of it's condition. (I actually thought the secondaries and primaries were the same) What part of California are you in? I'm in Pomona.

Thanks! I am in the SF bay Area. Yeah, secondaries are the same casting but not machined the same. Many holes not opened, no choke, no idle mixture screw/hole, etc

Well, the good news is that I was able to drive 2 hours up to Travis AFB and get the two rebuilt carbs installed on the Corsa...

The bad news is that I left the keys at home.... :banghead: I feel like a total idiot...

We used a jumper wire to turn it over, but it would not "run".

Sigh...

If you got it to turn over, adding a jumper wire from the battery to the coil would have got it started temorarily. If you ran it too long that way the coil could over heat but it works when testing for 5 minutes or so.

Good luck on the carb hunt. I'm keeping the spare secondaries I have for my own use.

Do you know about the HUGE Corvair swap and show coing up in Palm Springs? One of the best places to shop Vair parts. It is late October.

Thanks, but the goal was to get it to drive home (1 hour+) we need to actually start it the right way.

Heather and I are going to REALLY try to get to the Toss. It would be great as I now have TWO Corsa's to work on!

6 days of working, three trips to Travis AFB (1.5 hours each way no traffic, 2.5 each way with)

I have rebuilt two of the four carbs and replaced the starter, and all 6 plugs.
She runs!!! It is now home with me safe and sound. 65-70 the whole way, and only three or four backfires! lol

Still have tuning to do, but it has FOUR carburetors, so yeah...
