:welcome2:  Welcome to the Corvair Forum!

There is way too little information provided to give you any kind of meaningful answer. One small photograph tells very little about the condition of the car. Rust and corrosion and body rot can be serous, expensive problems to repair. The Corvair is of unibody construction so most body repair requires cutting and welding — work that is usually beyond a DIY effort for most owners, which usually means paying professionals to restore the body.

Depending on your mechanical skills, knowledge, and abilities, most mechanical repairs on a Corvair are well-within the abilities of a "shadetree mechanic". What you don't know you can usually learn by following the instructions in the shop manual and by seeking guidance and assistance on this Corvair Forum and perhaps from other Corvair owners by joining CORSA (Corvair Society of America) if there is a local club chapter in your area. Corvairs enjoy a good supply of new and used parts from many online sources. Few parts are attainable locally, but just about everything you might need can be purchased from Clark's Corvair Parts and other sources.

A careful assessment of your own mechanical skills and abilities, your financial and time resources, whether or not you have access to tools and a place to work, etc. is also critical to the likelihood of a successful restoration project.

If you can provide more detailed pictures, including the interior, engine compartment, trunk, etc., a detailed description of the car you are interested in, and asking price and the car's location, members of the Corvair Forum might be able to provide some good suggestions and comments for you. But if you have no prior experience with classic car restoration, be careful with your choice and take your time. A little more time and money spent up-front for a clean Corvair can provide you with a more enjoyable hobby and daily driver, instead of taking on too much as a major restoration project for your first Corvair. Let us know more about yourself and your location. If there is a CORSA chapter near you, you should consider joining the club to learn more about Early Model (EM — 1960-1964) and Late Model (LM — 1965-1969) Corvairs. If you have never driven a Corvair, joining a local CORSA chapter might offer you some opportunities.

The following Corvair Forum link can provide you with a list of useful websites that should be helpful as a prospective Corvair owner. CORSA chapter locations, parts suppliers, and free technical guides, shop manuals, etc. are included...

:dontknow: He also didn't say how much rust. It the car has been exposed to road salt there could be severe (expensive) body rot and holes in the floor, as well as in the rocker panels, wheel wells, windshield frame area, etc. You did not indicate whether or not you have any experience with welding and body work. I would be very cautious. If the car is driveable, is it licensed for the street? Would the owner permit you to take it to a mechanic for evaluation? If so, perhaps you could make arrangements to have a professional body shop evaluate the rust and body condition, and provide you with a repair and painting estimate. This would help you to determine the true condition of the car.

In addition to a test drive, check the automatic transmission dipstick. The fluid should be clean and red in color. If it has a burnt smell and/or is discolored brown that is a sign of internal bands and clutches slipping and overheating — pointing to a probable transmission rebuild.

The 110hp Corvair engine and Powerglide automatic transmission both have a solid reputation for performance and reliability. Of course the condition of the powertrain in this Corvair has yet to be determined.

You did not indicate your specific location in Nebraska. If you are interested in seeking out and contacting other local Corvair owners, there is one CORSA chapter in Nebraska...
