Engine block numbers

Post by Rude »

I have found the body tag, the VIN tag, and the engine block number. I don’t know if it matters as far as value but I am curious if the engine is the original one. Brad helped decipher the body tag. Just wondering if it could match up with the engine block number. I am new to the Corvair group so like I said does it really matter?

Engine code (T0105) shows built 5th week of January and that it was a LM turbo (RL) so I think it is original to the car since body tag shows a turbo chassis and the chassis build date of 2nd week of January is close to the engine build date. Looks like the engine is original.

The serial number has another clue. 10537(L)

The L indicates it was produced in the Los Angeles plant.

The rest of the number, less the 10 becomes the sequence number produced.

Cool. Now find your cylinder head numbers to make sure they are correct. You'll need to unbolt some of the engine shroud, pry it back with a screwdriver or prybar so you can see them. Front of driver's side cyl head and back of passenger's side cyl head.
