Body Tags - Examples - Late Model.jpg
There is some overlap in the Information in the Body Tag and the VIN Tag, such as the make and model, model year, production assembly plant, and you can possibly determine the original paint and interior colors and applicable codes from observation, as well as the ACC Line options included in your car (assuming that subsequent owners did not change or add those options to your Corvair after production). Some body tag info, like the production month and week, were only recorded on the body tag and that information is likely lost.

I have not heard of anyone reproducing body tags to order.

1966 Fisher bodytags ACC line. (WRN and LOS)
The Letters are listed in groups. Letters following a number is in that group. The code letters are listed in the order they would appear. Some letters are in more than one group
Most 1965 codes carried over to 1966 unchanged. (New std equip eliminated some codes)

First Group ( no numeric indicator)
E = RPO A01 Tinted Glass ( Soft Ray glass in all windows)
D = RPO C06 Power Top (Manual top standard, no indicator)
W = RPO A02 Tinted Windshield only
O = Two tone paint trimpiece ( sedans only)
L = folding rear seat (500 series only)

2 = Second Group
M = RPO M35 Powerglide Automatic
E = RPO C60 Air Conditioning
R = RPO U80 Rear speaker
S = RPO U73 Rear ant.
T = RPO U75 Power Rear antenna
H = Heater delete

3 = Third Group
A = Rear armrest (500 series sedans)

4 = Fourth Group
O = RPO L87 Turbo engine
F = Remote outside mirror / updated CC group (lighting grp, door guards)

5 = Fifth Group
Y = RPO A49 Deluxe Seatbelts ( Stainless Steel Push-button Buckles)
O = Seatbelt delete? ( No cars found with this code, but may carry over from 65)
? = Shoulder harness
*Standard seatbelts, old CC group and padded dash are now standard. So C in group three, P in group four and W in group five no longer listed. Also 4spd transmission no longer listed, with the introduction of the new Saginaw transmission. Rear seatbelts are also now STD. Willow Run cars had the ACC codes all on one line.

Always nice to see those two match! Sadly, I've found a few that don't.

Who else would know, besides you and the guy who riveted the rear plate on? Do you just bolt the crossmember back on and sell the car?

So from what I am getting from this is the metal body itself does not have a VIN stamped in it. As long as a person found the correct rivets and rivet gun they could swap the VIN tag, front cross member, and engine compartment body tag and short of actually finding discrepancy between options no one would be able to tell they did it? Is this correct?

No. The "hidden VIN" is hidden by the front cross member but is not on a part you can unbolt or swap easily. The hidden VIN is stamped into the frame rail and is an integral part of the body.

With enough financial motivation, anyone with bad intentions can figure out a way to swap a VIN and not get caught selling a stolen car or hiding salvage title history. The welded on tags, roset rivets and hidden VINs were the best trick of the day to help prevent VIN and title fraud.

Few people buying a car will check the hidden VIN and most have no reason to. If a seller is telling me they have a genuine 66 Corsa vert with factory A/C, you can be sure I'm looking all that over with a magnifying glass.

I've had two cars brought in from other states that had inspections go sideways. They go through a physical inspection at the DMV here in Arizona. Any sign that something isn't right and they will get scrutinized big time when they make you take the car to the state police garage for a Level III inspection. If anything is out of whack or they feel there is fraud when numbers don't match up, it could be the last time you see your car. I got both of those cars cleared but one now carries a "Restored Salvage" title which lowers the value and sometimes limits how much comp insurance coverage you can get. That car had a "washed" title and when I took the seller to court I found out he had already been arrested for doing the same thing to someone else.

You could do that but if the new owner finds out he bought a VIN swapped car from you it will be up to you to prove you didn't know about it or actually have anything to do with it.
