1960 body tag help

Post by vairguy63 »

I’m looking at getting a Caveman ‘60 Monza 900 and would appreciate any help in decoding this body tag. I’m familiar with the process but can’t find any info on what the TRIM and PAINT lines here refer to:
TRIM 1-382 11
PAINT 926 with a - - - - 2201 under it

I believe the ACC line means padded dash and tinted windows. Is that correct?

Any help you experts can give would be great!

The 1960 Chevrolet Corvair GM Heritage Center Specs (Page 18) and 1961 Chevrolet Corvair GM Heritage Center Specs that were published did not include interior and exterior color codes that were reflected in the Body Tags for those years. The 1962 -1969 published Chevrolet Corvair GM Heritage Center Specs (Pages 68 and 69 in the attached 1962 publication) added the codes (RPO Numbers) and additional details in the tables provided.

:doh: :dontknow: To add to the confusion, your body tag shows paint color "926" — yet the available references only show codes "925" or "936". No paint code "926" is shown for any Corvair model year!

If you want to look at paint chips, Gary Aube’s site is an excellent resource:

Thanks Brad. That’s what I found too. Strange that 926 shows up nowhere! The 382 trim code is for green and that’s what it’s got on the inside. Crocus cream does seem to be the exterior color so maybe it was a ‘Friday night special’ and after a few beers the 6 looked like a 5? :)

The experts tell me they have not been able to decipher pre-62 Corvair body tag data nearly as successfully as tags after 62. I'm 95% a late model guy so I don't work on the earlies that much when it comes to body tag translation requests. If you can't find the info, it could be because no one has quite figured it all out yet. Rick Loving is usually the go-to expert when I have a question. He often sends out requests to Corvair owners for pictures of their VIN tags and body tags to help build his library of reference data.

I checked all my references (probably the same everyone is checking!), and also no 926 paint code.

I suspect that "926" was a "Typo", made by some tired or careless GM worker who meant to type "925" or "936" on his keyboard when he was creating the body tag in the production facility in Oakland, California. Imagine making thousands of these body tags every year. Sooner or later, you are going to "fat-finger" the keys and make an unnoticed error... only to have some Corvair guy notice the mistake about 60 years later!

Sounds about right... or it had a ‘special’ paint job. If a unique body tag is the reality, it just adds to the charm in my book. Thanks guys!

Investigate the car to see if you can figure out for sure if the original color is Crocus Cream and then we will know if that is a special code or a typo.

Will do! Just had a great guy from a local club do the inspection out where the caveman is. Says it’s clean so going to buy her and get trucked here by the 25th. I’ll inspect under carpet and other places not touched by repainted and let you know :)

Apologies about being late on the resolution to this. We got the ‘60 900 coupe and it’s definitely Crocus Cream. Removed door sill plates and lifted carpet to check if the OG paint there matched the rest of the car in trunk areas, and engine bay. So the 926 code was just an error for 925. Just rebuilt the carbs with my son and she’s running better. Thanks to all!

I was pretty late to this party, just happened to see this while browsing threads…

07B = Body Built 2nd week of July 1960 (July 11th, 1960)
60-927 = 1960 Corvair Monza Club Coupe
BODY OA 1522 = Oakland CA Assembly plant, 1522nd Monza coupe body built
TRIM 882 = Met Med Green Imitation Leather Bucket Seats
PAINT 926 = Crocus Cream Exterior Paint
ACC
6A = RPO 668 Padded Instrument Panel
EZ = RPO 398 Tinted Windshield

2201 = Internal plant order number, bodies were planned in groups of 9999 for parts ordering, this was the 2201st # of this order group.

Paint code 925 and 926 are both Crocus Cream. 925 was primary code used at Willow Run and on the majority of the paint charts, any variation of chemical makeup or formula required an additional code assigned. Sometimes it was an A or B after the code, others it was a different code. Oakland used an alternate variation of Crocus Cream under 926.

Here is another CaveMobile offered for sale from the Caveman Garage. This one is a Monza coupe in rare Crocus Cream paint. The interior is green buckets with the passenger's side fixed to the floor with no adjustment fore and aft - just like the factory designed it. This car is from the collection of the late Don Schneider, famous for "The World of Corvair". in central Ohio. Sadly Don has passed on and this car reminds me of him and his enthusiasm for the hobby every time I see it.

Another interesting point with this car; the Franklin Mint used this one as the 1:1 scale prototype to craft their 1/24th scale die-cast model back several years ago. I tried to get them to paint the model crocus cream - but they went with ermine white instead. At least they carried out the interior color scheme in green for me.

Car is stored for the winter. Runs and drives fine. PM me for more details.

Sorry to revive an old thread but I have a very similar Body Tag, looks like Crocus Cream as well (green interior). Thought it might be helpful as it's another paint 926 and doesn't seem to match what I've read.
