66 VAIR-8 Project

Post by Vair-8 »

This is a project that has been going on for some time. The original post was put in the performance topic page and I thought it should be here. This has been going on for several years now due to some set backs and working around a busy work schedule. We now have two vair 8's, this one is a 66 and my fathers is a 68. Our goal is to get this one on four wheels and then work on my fathers because it is further along. Will post his car later.

Keep doing a little work each week. Eventually you'll get it on the street,

So many projects...so little time.

It looks great !!!!
I was wondering as to the leg room. It looks like the water pump / accessory section is actually in front of the door jam. How much room will you have for seats and your legs ?

I'll take a picture of side view from door frame. This kind of set up doesn't leave much leg room. I will be installing a swivel on the bottom of my seat so I can sit first than turn in. I got this idea from another vair-8 conversion. I will also install a grant steering wheel without the spacer to reduce length. Clarks use to sell panel so you could extend the floor which moved back the pedals to give more leg room.
The engine actually is further up than normal because we went from a manual to a auto tranny set up.

Little set back this weekend. We thought with new power glide conversion it move the engine where we wouldn't have to modify the cross member. Will after installation it is still a little to close. There is a little gap but not enough for any kind of movement. We pulled out the cross member and will have it cut and welded. This will hold up the installation of rear arms and struts.

Didn't like position of alternator. With leg room being at a minimum the alternator came to close with angle of seat. We ordered a new bracket and relocated the alternator which gave more room.
