The Spousal Avoidance Unit build
Re: The Spousal Avoidance Unit build
we are now down to the last 30 days of this undertaking. The engine is ready for the install. It turned out way better than I thought it would. Here it is
This engine is actually one of the center bolt valve cover engines. I found some adaptors that bolt to the head and allow older straight across valve covers to be used. That is the silver piece you can see under the valve cover.
I had a couple of people question the control arm mounts. These would be the gold colored rods with hiem joints that connect to the trailing arms. We finished welding those yesterday along with gussets. This is what the cross member mount looks like.
We also were welding up the motor mounts until we ran out of welding wire which brought the entire thing to a stop until Monday. Here you can see the alignment of the motor mounts and the control arm mounts on the cross member
More to follow later this week

_____ *****MILESTONE*****_____
We reached a milestone in the build today. The frame rails are all prepared, welded , ground and painted. We are now ready to hang the engine and transaxle. The hanging shall commence on Monday afternoon. Until then, enjoy some recent pictures.
The first picture is the finished passenger side frame rail. We have plated the sides and top of the frame rail as well as welding in the cross member mount.
This is drivers side frame rail with all the same modifications
The structure that is under the rear grill has been preventing access so we cut it out. We now can get the distributor to fit under the grill
Much bigger progress to follow this next week

Awesome keep it up! Love watchin the build. I build from wood not steel but my motto is: "always overbuild". Yours seems the same looks real strong. Lookin forward the powerplant!

I noticed that also, I believe it's an aftermarket electric window kit.

Re: The Spousal Avoidance Unit build
That is a SPAL power window kit. It mounts to the regular window register and uses a electric motor / cable drive to lower and raise the windows. I have all 4 windows setup with these. They made for an easy setup. You can see the power windows buttons on the chin panel in the middle of the dash.
in this picture you can see the front window units

Two more holes to drill in the front cross member and this baby is put to bed. It sure is nice when things work out like you planned. I just finished welding up the coil over mounts on the trailing arms. I am thinking they will see paint over the weekend and bolted in for the last time
After that the machinist can whip up my axles. By the time he is done, This will be a driving vehicle

Wow that went fast.
It is one of the nicest V8 builds I've ever seen. That's going to be a sweet ride.

Re: The Spousal Avoidance Unit build
Thanks for the nice comments. I appreciate them !!!!
AZDAVE has really been a big help and his build pics have almost been our road map. Big kudos to AZDAVE.
The plan is to have plates on this thing and driving by October 1st......about a month and a half longer than expected but still worth the wait.
Cooling system build will start this weekend. I have most of it done in my head so it shouldn't be too hard to make.
Now that the engine / transaxle is in place, I can get my measurements for the axles to the machinist............then.......................................it is put my foot in it time

Re: The Spousal Avoidance Unit build
Very nicely done. By all appearances, it looks like you could install a back seat if you wanted to. That would be a great feature if you're planning to use this car on the street, help keep the noise inside to a low din, and reduced heat in the cabin as well. Keen to see the final.
Cheers,
Rick
