50 Chevy kingpins

Post by 4carbcorvair »

First time ever doing king pins. After doing the first side, the second side took less than an hour to do. I had a hard time on the first one getting the caps off. Second side I used the air hammer and had them out in about 30 seconds. I had at least 1/4 play in the front wheels, if not more with the old king pins. Most of the time was cleaning things up to find where the knuckle was. No joking, parts of the knuckle had at least an inch of caked on grease and dirt. They were basically big black and brown blobs of crud. Almost a dust-pan full of crap. Explains why the underside of the car is in such good shape...

Yeah not hard to do at all. Did you have to ream the bushings out? I did a Model A front axle, and ended up tracking down a club localy with a reamer to save me from that investment on a one time use tool. Donated $10 bucks to go to their club car and they let me use the tool. Worked for me, they came up with the price, I would have payed more.

Didn't need to. Bought a kingpin kick from the National Chevy Association (49-54 Chevy vendor). Everything went smooth. :)
