SPAMALOT

Post by Scott H »

Sorry for all the :spam: that has gotten through in the last couple of days. They have figured out how to get past the Q&A countermeasure. I have made some changes and they should not be able to get through as easy now. :assault:

I must say that I don't understand the incentive they have to saturate a Web site like the Corvair Forum with all of that irritating, useless advertising. Do they really think that breaking past a barrier and throwing massive quantities of medicine advertising and marketing, or bogus narratives about shoes, etc. will produce any kind of desired outcome for them? What is the point? Just to prove that it can be done on an open, public forum? Ultimately, the Corvair Forum users would never respond favorably to such an invasion.

If someone sneaks into your yard during the night and covers your house with graffiti that attempts to promote some idea or product, are you going to be inclined to buy the product when you discover their mess? I don't think so.

Anyway, thanks for the update and your diligence in trying to maintain a quality, highly reliable network site and server for the Corvair Forum. I'm sure that most of us take the Forum for granted and enjoy the communication services it provides, not realizing that it takes some work to protect the platform and system the Forum exists on to keep things running smoothly and reliably.

The Spammers have automated bots that search the internet for forums, register accounts and automatically make posts. They get paid by clicks so its lucrative for them and very irritating for us. We used to be able to block them by those goofy CAPTCHA filters but now they have figured out how to get past those. Then we went to a Q&A filter. Now they have figured out how to search for the answers to the questions. Ours was "which automaker made the Corvair" which of course was Chevy or Chevrolet or any other variation of that. As soon as they figured it out we got hammered. I made some more changes and it has stopped them so far. I'm sure they will figure out something else later but for now it should be nice and quiet.

Thanks for all the support and a special thanks to those here that help out. :tu:

Holy sh**!!!! I think it's time to start requiring questions such as "how many carburetors did the 150/180 H.P. motors come with?"

You spoke too soon and jinxed the Corvair Forum again! Now there is somebody dropping spam poop all over the site, using computer gaming as the subject matter!

Will this ever end? :whoa:

There are still some spammers accounts I have not deleted yet. They had not yet posted anything, well two if them just did ...I'll get the rest cleaned out later this evening. I am able to ban them, delete their accounts and entire library of posts. If any show up again and I am not on feel free to message me like you have and I'll get after them ASAP. Thanks guys!

I'm sure this is frustrating for you, and you really cannot eliminate new, unused accounts until they do something wrong by posting more spam.

Thanks for guidelines on what we can do to assist you. Let us know if there is anything else we can do to assist, but I suspect all we can do is advise you when we spot a new "invasion force".

You have been an asset around here Brad. Maybe I should make you an admin or something.

I was an electronics and computer technician with the Air Force for 24 years, and a network administrator and computer technician for Pennsy Supply in Harrisburg, PA for nine years (working with a Citrix-based network that covered our locations in Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey) until I basically retired to take care of my wife's health problems and my aging father, but if you would like me to help out in some way with the Corvair Forum I would be glad to assist.
