Re: funny picture thread
I think outhouses have fallen out of favor, ever since Sears Roebuck discontinued publishing those thick catalogs... hard to keep the old outhouse stocked with paper supplies!
Well, you've got me "on a roll", so to speak.
Outhouse
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outhouse
There is a great deal of outhouse history on Wikipedia, if you feel the urge. Unfortunately, all of this material is "virtual" in nature, and not printed on paper -- so again, the old outhouse is left without!
One final point of interest (?)...
When I saw this, I was concerned about the poor guy who ended up on the lower floor, but, not to worry...
Ya know, Ken Burns has done so many documentaries for PBS that cover various aspects of Americana... Baseball, The Civil War, Jazz, Prohibition, The Dust Bowl, The National Parks, etc. Maybe PBS could contract with him to do another special... on the American Outhouse!
...By Ken Burns. Brought to you by PBS and the American taxpayer!
OK, I'll stop. I just thought that the people up in Maine would enjoy this!
I never understood about corn cobs... maybe Crazy George can explain?A roll of toilet paper is sometimes available. However, historically, old newspapers and catalogs from retailers specializing in mail order purchases, such as the Montgomery Ward or Sears Roebuck catalog, were also common before toilet paper was widely available. Paper was often kept in a can or other container to protect it from mice, etc. The catalogs served a dual purpose, also giving one something to read. Old corn cobs, leaves, or other types of paper were also used.

Maybe a properly designed two-story outhouse would help with the risk of bear invasion. The waste from "upstairs" is directed down a chute separate from the "downstairs" facility in these instances, so contrary to various jokes about two story outhouses, the user of the lower level has nothing to fear if the upper level is in use at the same time.

Is this a picture of the original stylist and body designer who developed the 1960 CAVEMAN CORVAIR look?

Re: funny picture thread
The photo below made me realize that the GM stylists had the right idea in 1960 -- they just put the CAVEMAN Corvair look at the wrong end! They finally got it right when they moved the concave look to the other end in 1965!
