Testudo (tortoise) by Giugiaro :)

Post by AndyF »

1963 Italia – Carrozzeria Bertone Chevrolet Corvair Testudo Concept – Designer Giorgetto Giugiaro
Bill Mitchell at GM styling decided to have a competition of sorts, sending two Corvair chassis to Italy with an idea towards selling a European styled Corvair on the continent. One went to Pininfarina and the other to Bertone, where a young Giugiaro was working....
...
The late Tony Lapine said that it directly influenced his design of the Porsche 928....

Interesting, but I'd hate to have to get in and change the plugs on that thing.
Also, the glass roof HAD to be hot as blazes during the summer!

I always wondered about the "Greenhouse effect" in that car. With no roll-down side windows and no air conditioning, I wondered if this was simply an impractical show concept car or was it really driveable? Was there any "flow-through" ventilation?

I haven't been able to find out too much about the ventilation, but I do remember reading that Bertone drove the car across the Alps to get it to it's first car show, and reading that the comment was "While the glass roof would have been unbearably hot during the Summer, for an early Spring day at high altitudes, it was comfortable".
I have heard that the Ford Crown Victorias and Mercury Sun Valleys that had the plastic roof sections tended to heat up A LOT during the summer, even with the zip in sunshades that Ford had for them.
I can imagine the Testudo would have suffered the same type of problem.
