65 corvair disc brakes

Post by Jonathan's61vair »

I am going to be receiving a 65 corvair 4 door 140 on January 15th. I am going to get it running and I am pretty confident of what it needs. this will be my daily driver so I would like to know what it takes and how much it is to do a disc brake conversion. :chevy:

Depending on the kit . First thing I would do to a 65 is buy the dual master cylinder kit. Which makes front and rear braking independent and the corvair much more responsive on manual brak ing power.

Then when u have the kit. Front disks are the only upgrade you will need on a street corvair.

The Vair "kits" usually include rotors and calipers from other cars. The kit makers have done all of the homework for you and provided a nice adapter bracket. Most require you to machine the hub slightly.

Scarebird makes brakets if you want to do it on you own. Search around and you'll find discussions on S-10 rotors and calipers as well as many other GM vehicle options.

Buy this and then get the rest on your own from local stores.

I used the scarebird brackets and after gathering all the parts and machine work needed ( S10 Calipers, Blazer Rotors, 20" Braided Lines, Hub center hole turned 1/8 inch larger, Dual master, pads ) I'd say all in all I spent close to $800 to do the conversion........if not more. Although parts in the USA are cheaper expect to get close to this figure. Is it worth it? Dunno, I don't have it on the road yet.

I think most people using my kits end up spending around $350

Did you do the rear? I'm in the middle of that now and am having some fitting problems.
