Whining sounds at certain RPM’s in every gear

Post by Madracella »

I have a sound coming from the engine that only appears midway through acceleration in every gear. I hear it and for a few hundred RPM’s and then it goes away, switch gears, and happens through all the other gears. It doesn’t affect the performance of the engine, but sounds odd. Please help!!

Thanks, Tim

You sure it is an engine noise? this type noise is usually a transaxle noise, not and engine noise. is the transaxle (differential) gear oil the correct type and full?

:welcome2:  Welcome to the Corvair Forum!

So if you rev the engine while parked, you still hear the noise? That would eliminate the transaxle, since it is mostly idle while parked.

If it appears to be an engine-related noise, did you consider removing the fan belt for a short period and then restart the engine and run it briefly without the belt? Is the noise gone without the fan belt in-place? If so, it is probably coming from the fan bearing, idler pulley bearing, ore the alternator.

An inexpensive mechanic's stethoscope may help you to identify the exact location of the noise source.

There are several CORSA (Corvair Society of America) club chapters in New York. CORSA clubs vary with membership participation, but generally they are helpful, family-friendly groups who organize meetings, picnics, car shows, competitions, scenic drives and technical training sessions. In comparison with websites like the Corvair Forum, the CORSA chapters are local in nature and represent "the other side of the coin" in obtaining Corvair support and guidance. Face-to-face contact with like-minded Corvair owners can be very helpful in finding your first Corvair, and can increase your enjoyment of your Corvair once you are an owner.

I changed the belt, but no improvement. I will try to remove the belt and see if that eliminates the issue. I will reply with my findings.

Thank you

My 140 4-speed has plenty of park to spare.

That's all it's done for 20 years.

It's actually loitering. It isn't capable of parking.

In my experience, "you rest, you rust" applies to both people and Corvairs.

Sorry for derailing, Madracella. Back to your scheduled program.

Need a little more info about the car. If it is a Spyder with a turbo you could be hearing the turbo start to spool.

Not much information like model, engine, year.

Just guessing here, but madracella said it makes the noise in "PARK" and he probably meant "NEUTRAL" with a PG automatic. So that's a no load condition and if the noise is the same it might suggest a bad fan bearing, or alternator, idler bearing, etc. Check the fan belt also.

You should be able to run the engine briefly with the fan belt removed, to see if that step eliminates the sound. It could be a harmonic vibration from the generator that occurs at one specific RPM.
