The gauge on the car does not work, I have bench tested it when I had the dash out and it is good so I start at the thermister and trace the wire. Under all the tape the wire hooks up with 2 wires. One I assume by the looks continues to the dash. The other wire loops back and is attached to the plus side of the coil.
What is the thinking here because it makes no sense to me and does not show on the schematic.

If that is what it does it is incorrectly wired. The wire from the thermistor should go directly to the gauge (Ok it goes thru a couple plugs along the way but...directly to the gauge). Sounds like the thermistor is wired to your ignition feed.
