Carter YH carbs wanted
Hi All,
Firstly new to the Forum and thanks for having me.
I'm chasing four (x4) single barrel side draft carbs in either good quality usable rebuildable condition (or as rebuilt items) for a Buick straight 8 project so they need to be matching. I believe there are two different Corvair versions (the 150 and 180hp), so the 150hp would be the better option for a 320ci Buick. Depending on cost, shipping would either be directly to Aus or to a fowarding company in CA where I can organise sea freight. I'm open to other suggestions as am not that familiar with early American cars with single barrel SD carbs. I've seen that people do a two barrel sd weber carb upgrade so hoping I'll be lucky....
Thanks for your time.
Mick
P.S. You can email me directly: michael.stumpf@bigpond.com with photos and prices (thanks again)

I've always been a fan of the big Buick OHV straight eight. Only downside is the loooong crankshaft does not like high RPM. The engine was revised and improved until 1952 after which the new Buick V8 replaced the big inline eight. Even in 1952 the compression was relatively low compared to today. A bump in compression, hotter cam, and multiple carburetors bring it to life and it's impressive to see.AussieBuickL8 wrote: ↑Fri May 03, 2024 1:21 pm Hi All,

There were aftermarket inductions systems made that used multiple carburetors, usually downdraft. That said the side draft carburetor allows a low profile if you need that.
The Carter side draft was used on a few engines in the 50's. I recall the Nash "sports car" used them. Posters at the Vette sites say the Carter side draft was used on the early Corvette inline six.
NOTE: the Corvair Carter YH was revised often during its use on the Corvair turbo. Bob Helt published a book about the Corvair YH carburetor.
Good luck with your project.

I am also a Buick 8 fan. I think the early 50's Buick concept show car called the "Wildcat"? featured the 320 straight 8 with 3 YH carbs.

Funny that Straight 8's are brought up!!
Just fired my 1952 Pontiac 8 yesterday.
Sounding bitchen and running smooth.
The Stig (Geoff) looking down smiling.
Picture is a 1954 Pontiac with 4 YH's.
Another carb to consider is a 2" SU.

I have a NOS one I will sell if the price is right! Also, Phil I have a rear fold up Luggage Rack that might fit your car as well?

Or the Chevrolet Corvette literature... The Blue Flame six was all Chevrolet had to put in the 1953 and 1954 Corvettes, remember the SBC was a 1955 model year engine!
All the six cylinder Corvettes used three YH. It helped get more horsepower out of that 235.
Also the YH is found on Nash (#0-1036 was sold on Ebay March 6) and Gray Marine applications. All with different partnumbers, which are stamped on the top of the body of the carburetor even of the tag is missing. See Ebay item #186276244434 and look near the choke rod/link to see a number example. Oh, never mind, I will copy and paste here so it stays even after the sold ad disappears in a while. [/color]

Re: Carter YH carbs wanted
So what are the part numbers for EM vs LM turbo carbs?
I have a few that came in a parts haul a few years ago, but I have no idea which they are.

Not what you were inquiring about, but if you can't score enough YHs, here's an alternative. Few years ago I was able to attend a Corvair show at the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing in York Springs, Pennsylvania. admin@emmr.org Here is a video walk through of the museum; at 5:30 there is a Buick straight with what appears to be a homemade manifold with four two barrel carbs. Very little info on the placard, don't know if the museum staff could provide any more.
